Nervous about HSG

Hey folks

Got my HSG test tomorrow morning, I’m feeling nervous - about the test itself but also about the results.

Are there any questions I should ask? Do you know if they’ll tell me straight away if there’s something wrong?

Any words of encouragement appreciated 🙂

Thanks!

I was told straight away, someone else recently was told they would get their results soon.

Hopefully you can see the screen whilst it is being done.

They are looking for blocked tubes basically so you may be asked to move around a little so the dye can slosh around.

If you can see the screen you might be able to tell yourself as it was so bright when I looked.

I didn't find it painful and normal service resumed shortly after.

Good luck xxx

Thanks Camillage, I saw the screen in the last test (can’t remember the name of the test) so hopefully this one will be similar in that way. xx

Hey.

I had my HSG about two weeks ago now. I was so so scared! (I’m a big baby) I looked online and saw some horror stories, but it was fine! It was literally over so quickly, mine wasn’t painful just intense period pain for a few seconds, I didn’t get told straight away which was stressful, but you can watch the screen if it’s visable. Mine was behind me so I couldn’t see.

You will be fine and good luck xx

Thanks Chloe - how long was it before you got told? Did you have any pain afterwards? xx

I had to wait 3 weeks to find out as I already had an appointment booked for today with my fertility doctor. I had cramping for an hour max. I was fine after. You will be fine xx

I read the horror stories but it really wasn’t too bad at all. Felt a bit crampy when the catheter went in but I’d built it up to be so much worse.

I got my results immediately.

Good luck x

Thanks Kyell2, I’ve not read the horror stories (on purpose) but I’ve seen folk on here say it was very painful. I’m

most scared about the results but at least it’s an answer either way xx

Yeah I like to be fully prepared for the worst to happen and so google way too much.

I’d forgotten until I saw Tugs comment below that you should take a few painkillers about half an hour before you go in. You will be absolutely fine x

I normally do the same as you but I just don’t want to know this time, I’ll go in all naive 😂

Thanks x

They wouldn’t tell me anything from mine and said I’d have to wait for results, which were fine. It’s not too bad having it done. Just take some paracetamol and if you have any cramping later (like af type cramping) then use a hot water bottle xx

Thanks Tugsgirl, good to hear your results were fine - how long did you wait for them? xx

Hello! I got my results immediately but you can ask for a print out of the sonographer's notes. As others have mentioned I was asked to take painkillers 1h before. I could feel sharp period pain that did not last very long. You will be fine! x

Thanks! Oh and good tip, didn’t know I might be able to get a print out of their notes, I’d like that. x

Yeah couple of painkillers an hour before and it was fine just quite embarrassing but if the aim is pregnancy then labour will surely be worse!

Also take a sanitary towel with you as they give you an NHS one which is like a nappy and NHS pants which are awful, just so you can change before leaving the hospital!

Thanks everyone for all your comments and encouragement it really helped!

On my way home, it was absolutely fine, didn’t hurt at all - I didn’t even feel the tube going in. Bit uncomfortable and obviously a bit embarrassing.

Good news though, she told me straight away that tubes are open and all looked fine. xx

Great news. Now onto next steps xx

I just felt some cramping and that was all, didn't feel any pain at all. I could sneakily look at the screen and could see how one side was looking fine and the other was blocked. I had been doing some google research the days prior. I think its perfectly fine for you to ask the Dr what he/she found right after before you receive your report. I got a report on the same day just had to wait 1 hour but the Dr had already told me what to expect. Good luck! Don't be scared, it's great news you are having the test, more information for your final diagnosis and treatment if needed, good luck xx
