HSG and success stories?

Hello lovely ladies!

I’m finally having the HSG test early October and have been reading about it a bit.

I found quite a lot of information about women getting pregnant soon after the test.... So please could you share your stories? Have you had any success?

Also, any tips on how to prepare for the test (both mentally and physically) would be very welcome! I won’t deny that most of the comments I read was about how horrible the test was...!! 😬🤭

Hi, I had it done and it was pretty horrible so would advise to take paracetamol before. Luckily it doesn’t last too long. Also, the dye didn’t get through one of my tubes as it went into spasm. The laparoscopy that I had confirmed that both of my tubes were fine. I have read about it later and it looks like some clinics advise to take antispasmodic suppository before the test. Might be worth of checking with your clinic? Good luck x

Hi, I didn’t find it that bad (they just got the catheter in though) I only had a couple of mins where it felt like period cramps and that was it. Unfortunately it didn’t help us conceive. I would recommend taking your own pad for afterwards as you leak a little (they dye has to come back out) and the NHS ones are as you would expect, cheap and awful (luckily I had my own). All the best x

Thank you for the tip! I’ll definitely take my own pads as I have seen the ones they give at the hospital... 🤦‍♀️😂

I’m not going to lie, I found it uncomfortable but not terrible. It’s quite tricky turning over when they ask and your clamped open but I can laugh about it now. I remember the Doctor talking to me about imagining I was lying on a tropical beach 🏝 lol. I did ask my gp to prescribe some Valium as a muscle relaxant so you could always try that. I wasn’t fortunate to conceive afterwards but at least all was ok xx

Haha, what a great doctor! I can’t quite imagine how you could think of being on a tropical beach while sitting on a hospital bed... 😂 But good for him/her to try to make you feel relax 😅

I had mine in 2015 and it was quite awful but everyone reacts differently.

I had to ask the doctor to stop as the pain was quite bad, I was given an injection and I'm pretty sure it was an injection of buscapan to help with pain.

It was worth it though as we found out where the issues where in the tubes.

Best of luck. Xx

Ohh sorry to hear that... :( Do you think you could have asked for the injection before they started? I wonder if they can do that for me...

I’m generally quite bad which these kind of tests so can imagine I might need something... 😅

I don't see why not. You could explain that if possible you'd like them to give you pain relief, No harm in asking 😊

I'm normally quite good with pain but it was very uncomfortable and painful.

Hi I had mine done about 6 months ago, I took paracetamol before it. I would say like others, everyone reacts differently. I just found it uncomfortable, more than painful. The lady doing it was lovely, and just kept telling me I was doing well. She talked me through it the whole way, some people need this, but for me I just rather they explain at the start and get on with it. It’s easy for me to say now, but the more that you try to relax the less uncomfortable you’ll feel. I had some cramping for a bit after, but took some tablets and had a warm bath! I have read that people have conceived after this, it didn’t happen for us, but I wasn’t expecting too due to my husbands condition. Hope it all goes ok for you, you’ll be fine xxx

Thank you Sweets, that’s really sweet of you 😊

I must say I’m a bit afraid but hey, it’s got to be done and I have to be brave! ;)

All the best for you and your husband! Xxx

Hi Abi

Thank you for asking but I didn’t do it in the end...

On the day when I was supposed to get on my period and call the hospital to arrange HSG, I got a positive pregnancy test. I was really shocked and not expected that!!

How are things with you? Xxx

Thank you!

I’m not feeling too good, have lots of stomach pain all the time. But had a scan a few days ago (when I had some spotting and strong pain) which confirmed the embryo is there but they want to do another scan a week later to see if it grows... So I’m not too optimistic... :(

in reply toMaggieBluee

Lots of women spot in early pregnancy, only if it’s heavy bleeding & you’re doubled over in pain to be concerned ( that’s what my GP said - I have had some spotting at 6.5 weeks)

The scan should reassure you. A bit of cramping is normal in early pregnancy ( I did until 7 weeks I’m nearly 9 weeks) It’s hard not to worry ( after what we’ve gone through to get there & the worrying never ends 🤦🏽‍♀️)

The pain could be trapped wind very common in pregnancy & would feel similar to cramping.

Let me know how your next scan goes every thing crossed for you . I’m sure you will be okay xoxo

Thank you lovely! You’re right, after what we’ve been through it’s so hard not to worry!!

The pain worries me the most (I’m constantly on paracetamol). But as long as the scan goes well on Monday, I can forget about the pain! ;)

I’ll let you know how I get on...

How are things with you? How are you feeling? Xx

in reply toMaggieBluee

You think the worries stop at the test 🤣

Up your fluid intake might help & increase the fibre. There will be lots of stretching going on. And constipation is so common in pregnancy & no fun 🤦🏽‍♀️

I’m okay, quite bloated 🤣, and very tired! We are seeing the midwife on Monday & we are very excited about that 🙂 I’ll be 9 weeks on Sunday, how far gone are you? xoxo

So Monday is the big day for both of us! Fingers crossed all goes well! 🤞🤞🤞

I’ll be 7 weeks on Saturday 😊

in reply toMaggieBluee

Not that far behind me then! Good luck for Mondays scan xoxo

It’s not a particularly pleasant procedure. I took codeine/paracetamol beforehand to help with the pain. The worst bit for me was the feeling of pressure when they were shooting the liquid dye up the catheter for the X-ray.

Good luck with it and hoping it takes you another positive step forward in your fertility journey xx
