I had a HSG booked for last month however the antibiotics I had to take the morning of the test made me unwell, sickness and stomach pains. I spoke to the hospital and they said reschedule and speak to the fertility nurse about different antibiotics, so I did this and have new ones, I have it booked in for Tuesday morning.
Can anyone give me some advice please about the procedure as I’m worried sick xx

It's not as bad as you think. Basically a speculum is used - a bit like when you have smear. A thin tube is inserted into the uterus. It feels like a smear at this stage. It is uncomfortable but the main thing is to try and relax. Then you feel the dye go in and as your uterus fills, it feels like bad period pain. It's over in seconds. At the same time x-rays are taken to check your fallopian tubes arent blocked.
If you stay relaxed and know it's all for a good cause (to check your fallopian tube health) you will be fine. I hate procedures like this ( i think any woman does) and i am a wet lettuce but i was trying to have a chat with the nurse whilst it was being done. It made me relax more.
Everyone is different but I have to admit that to me it was extremely painful 😩
The pain lasted maybe 10 seconds but for sure the worst 10 seconds of my life.
I felt silly after because I did read about taking painkillers before the procedure make it less painful but I decided that they were overreacting when recommending that.
I wish I had listen!
Most ladies say it wasn’t that bad, so try not to worry to much 😉
True! I can only advise you to take pain killers before hand x
I took painkillers beforehand- about an hour before. There was some crampy pain as they put the catheter in but I focussed a lot on my breathing and that helped. It’s over pretty quickly- I was nervous beforehand but the nurse with me was so comforting which really helped.
The antibiotics really messed up my stomach too- did you have azithromycin?
Try not to worry too much (easier said than done I know) - it’s something that we have to do to get to our goal xx
Thank you for replying. I can’t actaully remember the antibiotic I was given, I had to take 3 tablets an hour before the procedure, within 30 minutes of me taking the tablets I was in pain and being sick, so I’ve been given different antibiotic that I have to take 3 days beforehand hopefully they are okay. Do you remember how long you was actually in for? Xx
I think the actual procedure - lying on the table, having the internal and then the pictures took about 15mins. The whole thing- getting ready and then changed etc took about 30mins. X
I don't recall taking pain killers. But I do recall that they weren't blocked which was good. And also, I was told that doing the procedure is like a treatment in itself and that sometimes people do actually get pregnant naturally following it x
Take some paracetamol beforehand. A better idea is to ask your gp for a muscle relaxant. Just to calm your nerves. I did. It wasn’t the most painful thing I’ve experienced but it was a tad uncomfortable xx
Thank you for replying. I’m defo going to take some paracetamol as that’s what I’ve been advised by a few people, can I ask the doctor for that? I didn’t know that! Thank you xx
Hey. I had mine done in August. I was quite nervous, got 2 ibuprofen an hour before the procedure. I did not feel any pain just a bit of discomfort down there. The doctor told me if i don't stress myself i won't even feel it. The only thing with me was a dull pain in my lower abdomen for 2 days afterwards but wasn't that bad. Best of luck and i hope all goes well for you. Xxx 🤗🤗🤗🤗
I took some painkillers before. I think it’s a completely different experience for everyone but I think the more you relax and just keep chatting away to the nurses then it’l all be done before you know it. Just another hurdle 😊 good luck xx
