2 or 1 Embryo!?!

Hello lovelies,

Got a dilemma. This is my 2nd round of icsi. Got 8 5d good quality embryos 1st time round but 5 didn’t thaw, 3 did thaw, we’re transferred but didn’t stick. All frozen due to risk of ohss.

Been told today 10 eggs have fertilised, which is great, still a bit sore from egg collection but will hopefully be good to go with a fresh 5 day transfer on Monday. Embryologist has suggested putting two embies in cos of previous failed goes, and I’m 38.

There’s so much for and against putting 2 in, what do you guys think if you were in this predicament?!

🙏 thanks

My clinic have always suggest putting 2 back in however I’ve had 5 transfers - 3x transferring 1 resulting in BFP (2 sadly ended in mmc) and 2x transferring 2 both unsuccessful. I would only ever transfer 1 now from my own experience but I do believe you need to go by advice from the embryologist, good luck x

Thanks for your reply.

Yeh she has suggested 2 and I’ve agreed but may change my mind by Monday!

I think it all depends on embryo quality. If you have one top quality you might consider transferring one but if the quality is good or average, you might want to put 2 back. My clinic explained that putting 2 back increases chances of pregnancy by 10-15% and half of the women who transferred 2 and got pregnant will have multiples. We had top quality embryo and they still suggested to put 2 back since we failed previous cycle and I’m 37 but we decided to try with one. I’ve got 3 days to go to my otd. Good luck xx

I had single transfers on 4 attempts as my clinic always advise against a double if you have good quality embryos. My bfps were singles. On my last transfer we did two as it was the only thing we’ve never tried before and the clinic didn’t have any issues with it this time. We got a bfn so it was a bit of a waste of at least one precious embie really, but that’s hindsight for you. I’m 38 too. Good luck with whatever you decide xx

Standard in clinics are if under 30, transfer 1, if under 40 but over 37 then 2. Over 40 I think you can have 3.

If you're prepared for the risk of twin pregnancy, then most in the medical profession would say go for 2. As a IVF veteran, there are so many factors at play, its a game of roulette - one woman who says it worked with at least 1 take home baby, you'll find someone who says 1 failed and and stopped the other healthy one growing, or that both worked and they were born with problems, so take everything others tell you with a pinch of salt and take the advice of your clinic, there's no sure fire thing to do with IVF for success. Best advice I can give is to hope for the best and plan for the worst.

Have you spoken to your doctor about baby aspirin to help with the embie sticking?

Best of luck!

Thanks Billywhizz. No I haven’t. Is that meant to help? X

its meant to help if you have embies aren't sticking, might be worth asking to speak to your doctor. Studies are still inconclusive, some argue it doesn't help (but it doesn't do no harm)

It used by the nhs for pregnant women who are at risk from Pre-eclampsia, my wife was on baby aspirin for our successful cycle, came off it at 10 weeks when we left the private clinic, then when we went to nhs maternity, they put her back on it up to when she was 36 weeks, as she was 40+.

best of luck x

I can only say what I would do and that would be to go with two and especially as the clinic have recommended it but only if they were the same quality. If one embryo was a lower grade there is research suggesting that the lower grade embryo causes the body to reject both.

If they are different quality I woukd go with one.

Good luck xx

Thanks genten! I’m hoping they’ll both be good quality!! x

Hello. Firstly congratulations on getting this far and with such a good number. Secondly, I am 41 and decided this time, after much deliberation and article reading, asking the lovely ladies here etc that I would transfer 1. Good luck with whatever you decide xxx

Hi. I had 2 transferred on my last frozen cycle and I am now 28wks pregnant with twins, previously I've had single transfers both fresh and frozen this has been my only successful transfer.

Twins makes Ur pregnancy high risk and a little more difficult however I'm.loving it and obviously wouldn't now do it any other way.

Take advice from clinic and ho with Ur gut.

Good luck.....

Ps. I'm 42 xx

We we given this choice on Wednesday as I prepared to go in for transfer

We were recommended 2 as out of all my eggs only two survived to day 3 and they ‘are not the prettiest’.

We had to decide there and then! In the end we went with what the embryologist suggested as we thought if that was their gut instinct then hopefully it would be the right decision.

We still don’t know if it is the right thing to do, it’s such a lottery.

I went with my gut instinct, I hope you can decide and it’s what your comfortable with. I suppose that’s all we can do.

Good luck x

Ah thank you!!! I’ve had every period like symptom under the sun convinced it would be negative! Now wondering if there’s one or two there!! X

in reply to Slewi

Ha ha. It is something to consider. Your clinic will most likely ask you to have a scan in another 10 or so days to see how many there are. Xx 😘
