Myself and my Husband had an appointment on the 1st August with a consultant after been referred by our GP. At the appointment we discussed what the next steps would be, some further tests and then follow up in 2 months. We also discussed that the likelyhood would be referral for IVF due to my Husbands semen results. I needed to ring yesterday and when speaking to the Doctors secretary asked when we would get the follow up appointment through, which would be beginning of October, to be told that currently appointments are been booked well into November and that the waiting lists for follow up is massive and she couldn’t tell me where we were on the list. All of the tests we need will be completed by the 19th September, just seems like such a long time to wait to see the consultant again.
Just wondering what other people’s experiences have been and once you had the follow up, how long did it take for your NHS funding to come through?
I know I’m probably been impatient but as we know there is a problem I just want things to move along.
Thanks x

Thank you for you reply. Gosh that seems so long, maybe I just expected it all to be quicker but guess there’s lots of people in same boat wanting appointments. I think because I got booked in for HSG the week after the first appointment, I was luled into a fall sense that things were moving fast xx
Hi, we started out ivf nhs referral in February and it’s still not through, I’m 40 in November so we decided to do it privately as we can’t guarantee the funding to be through before I’m 40.
Thanks for your reply. I guess I underestimated how long this would all take. I’ve been looking at private options this week just the expense to consider. How is treatment going for you? x
Hello! It was 6 months from the GP visit through to the initial appointment at the IVF clinic and we started on my following cycle - this was two years ago now xx
Mine took 2 years with all investigation till i had the ivf and it failed so between cycles took 6 months, so i had so far 3 cycles and all failed. Now I’m looking for a clinic abroad. Wish good luck xx
We visited our gp back in May just gone after ttc for 12 months and were referred to our fertility clinic. Our first initial consultation isn't until 10th September which feels like forever. I understand that there are waiting lists but 4 months just feels excessive! Like we haven't been waiting long enough already! Just out of curiosity how did your first consultation go? I just don't know what to expect as the information is quite limited.
Hello we also visited our GP initially back at the beginning of May. We were offered the first consultation initially on 3rd September but managed to get a cancellation and work were really good and let me go at short notice. Could be worth ringing to ask if there’s any cancellations. Apparently for the first appointment they have to see you within 18 weeks.
The consultation wasn’t very long, the consultant asked loads of questions. I’d already had bloods done on day 2 and day 21 and he was satisfied that they showed I was ovulating and then we discussed hubbys semen analysis. He said that if it came back the same after a repeat analysis then would be IVF any better then could maybe try IUI first. As he was thinking maybe IUI, I got booked in for HSG and also a scan. Then he said we will see him again in 2 months and he would do us a referral for the treatment. I guess the consultation might be different depending on what the issue is xx
Thanks lovely 😊 yes I may just do that, stupidly it didn't even cross my mind to call for cancellations🤦♀️ lol. Thankyou for the insight! I also have had initial bloods and dh has done first semen analysis - all appeared to come back okay but these weren't descussed in detail by the gp he just said at the moment there was nothing to worry about and would be decussed at the consultation. I figured they may want to repeat. X
Ours weren’t discussed in detail with us either, GP just told my Hubby that one of his readings was out of the normal parameters, it’s only because we asked for a print out of the results that we were able to see that the reading was 0!! Whereabouts in the country are you? x
Ahh I see, we had to call for our results, which I must say I wasn't so over thrilled about, but it meant a print out wasn't really an option at the time, we're in Devon, what about you? X
Yeah seems to be however I was shocked to descover that the NHS funding differs depending on where you live in the country. Awful really should be standard across the board. & Thanks lovely! 😊 Hope everything works out for you soon! Baby dust to you xx
We had 1 cycle funded on nhs but it was unsuccessful in Aug 2018 I then immediately looked into funding and sent a letter to ccg. That was end of August and since then had a few hiccups along the way. Hoping to hear a decision from the panel in a few weeks ready for our round 2 in December. We are based in Yorkshire too and it is slow but I guess it is everywhere. I find myself waiting for a call or letter, we know funding ourselves is plan b though. We started this process in feb 2018 x
We managed to get a referral to a private clinic that treats NHS patients, I didn’t realise this was an option but when I contacted the CCG you can be referred to any clinic that treats nhs patients but my GP didn’t offer this at the time, just opted for the NHS clinic. We had egg collection on Friday hopefully transfer on Wednesday but have to have OHSS check first. Do you mind me asking where abouts in Yorkshire are you? Good luck with the funding x
I got 19 eggs, they thought I only had 16 follicles altogether and they said some of those were small so I think they were a bit surprised! Got 10 embryos when they rang me yesterday, 7 which were at the stage they should be, can’t believe it. I know obviously they all won’t still be going by day 5 just hoping we have something to freeze as I found the egg collection really painful, only had a light sedation but I felt fully with it didn’t do anything so felt everything. I’ve been measuring my wee too and so far been ok. I am still really bloated but I know the follicles can refill just hoping I haven’t got fluid elsewhere. We are South Yorkshire in Sheffield. I’ve found it quite difficult to talk about especially with the in laws and I wasn’t very happy the other week as she put me on spot and ask me about it in front of hubby and father in law and asking where I do the injections etc and hubby told her I didn’t want to talk about it before then, I don’t know if it’s me just been touchy I just find talking about my private parts with them a bit uncomfortable 🙈 xx
How that’s a great number! Fingers crossed for day 5!
I didn’t have any to freeze unfortunately last time.
Yeah I completely understand. I felt the bloat!
Yeah I know what you mean, it is quite a uncomfy subject to talk about. We didn’t tell anyone so only had the other half but my mum knows now but I think still they find it hard to understand how difficult it is. I really enjoy talking to ladies that are going through it too.
Aw not that far. How is your clinic? Do you like it? Xx
Had transfer yesterday afternoon was worried they’d find free fluid but scanned me first and everything fine so transfer went ahead, just the dreaded 2 week wait to go now! We’ve been so fortunate we’ve got 5 frozen, couldn’t believe it when they told us.
I think sometimes I think there just been nosey but I get people are intrigued when it’s something they haven’t done and that they do care but I think they should wait for you to tell them what you want to instead of asking.
Clinic has been amazing, everyone so nice and made me feel really comfortable xx
Aw that’s amazing! Glad it went well and to get 5 frozen too!
The two week wait will fly by, it’s hard to not think about it. Are you taking time off work?
Yeah I agree. It’s a sensitive thing.
That’s good. Ours have been lovely to be honest. It had some bad reviews but I don’t know why. All the staff are so helpful especially when we didn’t know how it worked first time
Rest up now I’m sure your husband is taking good care of you 😊 xx
