1:469 down syndrome - stupid question...

Guys this result is ok for our nuchal scan right?

Seems like some people got 1:20000

But I presume we are ok?

Someone I know got odds of 1:150 and was really upset at first, but decided against further tests and all is perfect!xx

Yes I think it says negative and low risk - but just some others numbers were so high compared to ours....

Just hard to understand.

I am happy it says low risk.

Hi there, I’m glad someone else has asked this, I got my test results yesterday. They said : Downs age related risk is 1 in 369, individual risk at term is 1 in 19,071 so at lower risk. Is your ratio your age related risk or individual risk. I wasn’t sure what the average was? I think u are at a higher risk if 1:150 but I’m not sure xx

Hmmm it doesn't specify - it says we are low risk with no further tests required so I suppose that is good? Just have no idea...

Sounds good to me, maybe give your midwife a ring ? I seem to remember my midwife saying they only offer additional testing to scores higher than 1:150 so u r way below that xx

Yes I think I am happy. If anything shows up at the 20 week scan we can deal with it then.

Your results seem ok too?

So confusing isn't it?

That is a good low risk result. They do vary loads and yours is nothing to worry about. Imagine you were in a room with 469 people who all had the same result - only 1 of you would have a baby affected. I used to be a midwife and would be involved with referring women with high risk results - some as high as 1 in 10, and the baby was often still unaffected with results as high as that. Of course, the test itself is never a 100% guarantee even if you were one of the people who had a 1 in 10000 result. For that reason I actually choose not to have the test at all. I figured it would only give me something extra to worry about! Xx

Yes I am happy now with the result - you guys have reassured me :)

And of course dr google! Think it is just hard to understand these numbers a bit!

Thanks for responding!

I got 1:90... my baby is perfect! The calculations are based on age, IVF, etc ...

Ah that is good. Yes I am not worried now - just when you open the letter with all these numbers and of course you want 1:million! 😂

Congraulations on your healthy little one!

I know what you mean - you want the lowest odds possible! I read a good analogy when I got my results; you have 469 marbles, 1 yellow, 468 blue. What are the chances of you picking the yellow marble? Pretty low. 😁 It reassured me anyway. Xx

Haha so true. Yes I feel fine now. Just the initial confusion when you open the letter.

And know when you are a certain age you automatically get certain odds.

I am happy as we can share the news gradually with friends and family now.

I like your explanation - that is so good.

I assume your result was on the NHS testing... If you’re still concerned you can pay privately for the Harmony Test. It’s about 99% accurate for Downs risk and also assess Turners and Edwards Syndrome. The test is a blood draw and sample gets sent to the US (I think). They isolate the fetal DNA to assess the risk.

Ah thanks - but after doing some research and getting feedback from the lovely ladies on here I feel fine 😀

Thanks for the info though - would def do that if we were high risk xxx

It’s a 0.2% chance which is very, very low. The screening tests look at several indicators (inc. nuchal measurements and several hormone levels) but they also factor your risk based on your age... so that’s why you’re even given a rating which is a touch higher. I think mine was around the same for downs in the nhs screening (I’m 37) but importantly I came back as 1/10,000 in the harmony testing, which actually looks at DNA.

So nothing to worry about (yay!) & another big hurdle crossed. 🤗 So excited for you xx

Ah thanks sweetie - yes feel totally fine now. Thanks to everyone for explaining.

Yes such a relief to have passed this stage.

I think if we ever have future baby at an older age I will do the harmony test.
