I know how hard it can be to lose weight with an underactive thyroid....was just recently diagnosed. Have you had your levels checked recently? For conception they recommend you levels sit below 2 which may help if they were to put your meds up. Dont really have any tips on losing weight as I struggle myself but perhaps upping your activity levels, going for walks in this lovely weather and just I guess generally cutting down. Good luck.xx

Ive started at the gym too, every little helps! Well remember to say to your GP about what your levels should be....he should know if course but a lot of GP's out there arent too fussy about lowering your levels if they are within normal range!xx

Small changes all add up - take stairs instead of lifts/escalators, swap juices/fizzy drinks for water, have a filling breakfast (oats are good), clear your house of unhealthy snacks, leave time to walk/cycle instead of driving, and swimming is great. Do aerobic/interval training at the gym, not weights. If watching TV, do something active for 3mins in every advert break - go up and down the stairs, lift baked bean cans, do squats, balance on one leg standing on a cushion. Maybe not a popular suggestion but cleaning and gardening are good calorie burners! Good luck! xx

Oh and portion control your meals - use a smaller plate and increase veggies and decrease carbs (don't cut anything out, just change the proportions) xx

Thankyou sloop much for all your advice xx

Good luck! Plan your meals-and then shop accordingly. Buy some healthy snacks like carrots, cherry tomatoes, mini peppers and for moments when you just have to have them, some mini versions of a treat.

This is going to be controversial but you won’t lose weight by exercising alone- unless you manage to exercise yourself into a calorie deficit (and most people would get hungry to do that so end up eating the calories they have burnt!).

I echo re portion control- I started by bulking up all my food with some kind of vegetable/salad. I use bagel thins and sandwich thins. Subway salads are great if you are out and not sure what to eat (ranch dressing and sweet onion are ok dressings calorie wise).

If this is something that you want to continue then I really recommend looking at some recipe books or joining a club such as weight watchers or slimming world but take it with a pinch of salt (I don’t believe in the diet industry but weight watchers app helped me lose 10% of my body weight and I have kept it off for the last 6months whilst undergoing treatment).

And don’t punish yourself! As soon as I started to think “restricting” , I was hungry! But I also had to be honest about the amount of food that I was eating.

Sorry for the long post! Xx

Cut out or severely cut down your sugar intake. That includes making an effort to not eat processed foods that contain sugar. If you look at packaging you’ll be surprised - for example, some bacon and other packaged meat has sugar in, baked beans are full of the stuff, ready meals generally have sugar in, fruit juices, cereals, breads and fruit yoghurts all have a really high amount of sugar in them. Check your food labels carefully.

When I changed to a sugar free diet the weight dropped off me. A diet of fresh meats and fresh vegetables, avoiding sugar and lots of complex carbs will make a huge difference and probably very quickly.

It’s hard to stick to it but it gets easier. Really good luck xxx
