Self-funding progesterone injections for NHS frozen cycle....

Hey guys,

Has anyone had to self fund progesterone injections on an NHS frozen cycle?

We were recommended to do this rather than the progesterone funded by NHS as our consultant said research suggested good results.....

Anyone have experience with this? And/or success stories?

Never heard of having to do this.. I had Lubion and cyclogest on my rounds which were covered in the treatment and we only had to self fund them after we’d been signed off from the clinic xx

Hmmm that is strange.

He said that the progesterone he was putting us on wasn't funded by NHS...

Were the injections painful or same as rest of meds?

Thanks for replying.

At first I did find them quite painful, real stingers, but I soon got used to them, honestly xx

Ps, compared to Heparin the Lubion was a breeze! Lol 😂 xx

Aww yes than was the same with the other injections - first one was the worst!

Hi EB2001. I would have thought that if your specialist recommended injections, he/she could get it OK'd. I haven't heard much difference with results. I think I would check if the clinic could get them funded. Can be a bit sore to do, but if you do inject, ten try melting an ice cube on the spot before injecting, sometimes helps. Good luck! Diane

Thanks Diane - he said it works out at £15 a day which could stack up.....

Will check with the clinic like you said, appreciate your advice.

Hi there,

I asked our NHS clinic to put me on progesterone injections as opposed to the pessaries after our second cycle because I found the pessaries to be awful.

Initially I was told I would have to pay for the injections which I agreed to, but then they went away to find out more and on my next visit they confirmed the lubion injections could be provided free of charge.

The clinic has to send a prescription to Stork fertility who then courier the medication to me free of charge as for some reason the hospital chemist was unable to get it.

I would ask the doctor to double check the protocol and ask about the possibility of going through Stork.

I’ve used injections instead of pessaries on both of my last cycles. I got pregnant but miscarried last time at around 7 weeks and I’m currently 10 weeks pregnant after the last transfer and praying for a full term pregnancy and healthy baby at the end of this one!

Good luck! Xx

Ive never used the injections xx

I meant to reply to this earlier. Just wanted to add that I am on progesterone injections but funded by NHS. The clinic suggested it for this frozen cycle following a failed fresh cycle. I started bleeding two days before my OTD during my failed cycle. I’m 10 weeks pregnant now- still having the injections. I trained my husband to do them- they are less painful than I expected but I have a very lumpy bum and the progesterone makes me so so tired. But I can’t complain :)

Good luck chatting with your clinic.

Oh phew thanks so so much for this message.

Was it always funded for you? Or did you have to beg the clinic?

Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

No begging- it was their suggestion! Xx

Thanks Zoe :)

I’m so surprised they won’t fund this? My second cycle my clinic paid for the injections, now we are self funded we are having to foot the bill, and like you say it definitely adds up!! I’m on the injections and pessaries as my progesterone levels have been low in the past and resulted in bleeding, so perhaps ask them for a progesterone blood test a couple of days after transfer to see if the pessaries are doing their job? If so then you don’t have to worry about the injections, plus they’re bloody painful!! Good luck! Xx

Thanks for your advice.

Because we just had a failed cycle I don't want to use the perraries again especially after the consultant said there are better birth rates in research he has read from the injections - he has 20 years experience - I Google stalked him ;)

Yes it does sound expensive so will have to pay if the clinic don't budge.....

I usually have quite severe acne and this can be a sign of low progesterone....

Will try to explain to the clinic - I am unemployed at the moment so every penny counts.

Thanks for your reply!

Yeah definitely explain that, it seems very heartless for him to offer something of a lifeline and then take it away again, and everything adds up! When you first look at it a frozen round doesn’t seem too bad, but with drugs, blood tests, more blood tests MORE drugs! I dread to think! I suppose the next thing if they won’t budge is to shop about a bit and see if you can get it cheaper xx

in reply toAleelilook

Yes exactly - and if I need them surely they should be funded.

Aboard this crazy rollercoaster again ;)

Thanks for taking the time to reply
