IUI for ‘unexplained’ ?
Hi sammejayne we were offered iui but declined, our first consultant was pushing for it but I was 37 so didn't want to. I then changed consultant who was a bit older and wiser, and she said iui was a complete waste of time for us as normal chances are 15% so our chances were zilch! I think if I had of been late 20s, early 30s I would have gone for it as long as it was free on the NHS programme
Hi sammyjayne. If you are under 30 then there could be a chance of success. However, the older you get, the chances reduce. Have a chat with your specialist for an honest opinion. Good luck! Diane
We had 6 rounds when I was about 26. We had unexplained infertility and the IUI was a complete waste of time for us but it must work for some people.
We then had one round of IVF when I was 33 and that worked first time.
We didn't have to pay for anything luckily but those 6 goes of IUI would have cost as much as the one go of IVF.
agreed with DianeArnold, I would recommend discussing IVF PGS NGS if you are unexplained.
Worked for us!!
Two failed rounds of IVF then fell pregnant with IUI (I was 36 at the time and unexplained infertility). x
You given me a boost after reading all those comments above.. I've just started our second IUI, I'm 34, convinced naturally first time around but after 2 years of trying, and one miscarriage, still not pregnant. If our second IUI doesn't work I think we might give IVF a go. Glad it worked for you.x
Aww thanks! It really did come as a huge shock to us that it worked, the clinic too I think!
I didn’t respond well to the meds during the second round of IVF so rather than cancelling, the clinic reverted to IUI (meant we could have one more funded cycle of IVF).
I do sometimes wonder had we been given the option of IUI initially, would it have saved all the heartache of the failed IVF’s. Not that it matters now....
Wishing you all the best x
I’ve had 3 failed IVF and am really wanting to try IUI. Can you tell me a bit more about your journey. What medication did you have?
Hi Doglover7866,
My second round of IVF was converted to IUI as my body was responding to the meds. It was only really changed to IUI so that I could get another funded cycle of IVF (the NHS only fund 2 cycles in my area). Both us and the nurses (I think) weren’t really thinking it would work but my little girl will be 2 next month 💛
I don’t think there’s any harm in you trying IUI. I really wish I had been given the option but due to my age I was advised to go straight down the IVF route.
Our clinic in Scotland (Nhs) advised us to go straight to IVF as that is what the NICE guidelines recommend based on evidence. Don’t think they cared about age.
My clinic (also in Scotland) advised the same.... fast forward 4 years, 1 miscarriage and 2 failed rounds of IVF ☹️ Clinic then tried IUI and I fell pregnant with my little girl.
I know we’re all different but if I was to turn back the clock I would ask to try IUI first. What’s the harm? x
How did they decide to eventually try IUI?
Hi, our is unexplained infertility, too. I am 35 and we are advised to go for IVF straight. I am thinking should I try IUI before or is it a waste of time?
