Hi all. I’m new to this community. On a short cycle of IVF and having egg retreival tomorrow. I’ve been told it will be under sedation but I’m very nervous. Can anyone help me with what kind of drugs are used for sedation. Thanks and good luck to all xx

Egg retreival
Hi there, try not to panic! I was the same as you but on the day I was more worried about trying to keep a full bladder (harder than it sounds!). They give you a sedative - I think it’s called propofol which just makes you sleepy. A lot of ladies fall asleep and wake up not remembering anything. I had a few top ups as I didn’t fall asleep and found some of it really uncomfortable but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. I was a bit sore the day after but nothing major. Just try and stay calm and build yourself a playlist as I’m not sure about your clinic but mine let me take my iPod in to listen to music during the procedure which really helped me to relax. Good luck! 🍀
Hiya just wanted to say good luck for tomorrow. Try to relax know its easier said than done.
I too was on the short protocol and had my egg collection done under sedation.
I cant remember the exact drugs used but all i can remember from being in theatre is confirming my name and date of birth. I then was away with the fairies until i came round in recovery.
It was my 2nd round and because i knew what to expect i coped better, but everyone handles things differently.
I got my bfp this time and am now 5 weeks pregnant.
Xx
Welcome to the community! I know it's only natural to be scared about tomorrows egg extraction - honestly, I wasn't any less miserable than you are right when I had my egg retrieval. Yes, it will be propofol - they'll give you injection so you'll be sedated right away and won't feel a thing. Though the examination prior to the sedation might hurt, I can assure you it's quick and totally bearable. After the extraction is done you may spot a bit or feel cramping and stretching in the lower abdomen for the rest of the day. Don't get scared that's natural. Wish you good luck for tomorrow!
Hiya, I don’t know if it’s different in certain places but they can use fentanyl (a controlled drug) that’s normally given first, it’s a very strong painkiller. Then midazolam (makes you drowsy) and the propofol. I was really worried as I hate the cannula that goes in your hand (had bad experience with IV antibiotics) so I asked for emla cream which numbs the hand. If you want the cream ask them as soon as you get to the clinic because it takes at least a hour to take affect. Hope this helps x
They use a range of drugs at my clinic, I’ve had sedation four times and each time it was different proportions of the drugs. They all worked though and made me forgetful so I don’t remember any of the procedure. I had a lovely sleep instead!
