Hi all

Hoping someone has experience of this and can give some guidance on expected costs privately of having genetic karotyping done??

Many thanks

You might be able to get it via NHS...I will reply to you fully later x

Looks like we probably can - and think that’s what the letter from our current fertility clinic is gong to say. I’ve chased up today as was 4 weeks ago we last spoke and low and behold our letter is “sat in the tray waiting to be signed and posted”!

How typical...should ask them just to read it out to you?!

What is kartotype testing please? xx

Hey Tugs it’s testing the chromosomes of you and your partner, they take a blood sample from both of you and then go and grow your chromosomes. Takes about 6-8 weeks for results I think xxx

The DE clinic we are looking at says up to 2 weeks for them. So maybe this is quicker than if say the NHS. x

That sounds pretty good. We had hubby done through our NHS clinic due to his very low sperm count but took around 4-6 weeks to get the results back....or at least thats how long it took to get the results back from the hospital!xx

@tugsgirl I would expect them to offer you this if you get to the recurrent miscarriage clinic.

It can be used for looking at your chromosomes in you or/and your partner to check for example if you are a cystic fibrosis carrier etc. My hubby had this done as he had a very low sperm count.xx

I think Lizzielizzielizzie has been through this - she may be able to help?

I have but we paid for it as part of a suite of tests so we don’t know the cost of just karotyping. My guess is £250-300 per person. NHS will do it if there is someone in your close family who is a carrier of a disease or has a known chromosome problem but it’s long winded- my brother-in-law went to his gp and has had to be referred on to the genetics clinic and hasn’t been seen by them yet. Privately I think you can get the results back quite quickly... ours was meant to take six to eight weeks (along with all the tests we had which actually went to Chicago) but actually only took about four weeks. They won’t need to send them to Chicago if it is just karotyping so it should be pretty quick. They don’t need to grow your chromosomes as they are already there in every cell of your body. They just have to identify them all and check if they are normal with a super dooper microscope.

Thanks for that info hon! I’ve learned lots today. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve had these already as I’ve had MC screening, but who knows! So really the vibe I’m getting is check via GP first then decide if better route is via our potential new clinic. x

Maybe it would be worth requesting a copy of your medical notes before you go to Greece. It’s a maximum £50 charge for copying costs to get them, and your gp should have summaries at least of all your test results.

Yup letter already in the post to our GP :)

thanks Lizzie x

Hey WeeMrsH, I got a copy of my notes from my NHS clinic to send to my Greek clinic and it cost £20 so that might be an option too!xx

Hi MrsH I was fortunate to have this done via the recurrent miscarriage clinic I go to, but it had been mentioned in the fertility department of my hospital and was quoted at £500 xxx

WeeMrsH profile image
WeeMrsH in reply toSprinkles86

We have been quoted €110 per person by the DE clinic we are looking at, and if can get on NHS that could be good (our fertility clinic mentioned this but waiting on the referral) but if that will all take ages then maybe going with the DE clinic with the other (standard) tests they will be doing anyway then probably sensible doing that way and only wait 2 weeks for the results x

Yeah that’s not too bad really is it in the grand scheme of things xxx

I think that’s a good price when you think how much everything else costs! Does that include the cost of a consultation if they find something? Our clinic didn’t charge us for that consultation- I think they might have felt bad as they’d tried to tell us it was really unlikely those tests would show anything and then it came back that Hubbie is one of the 1 in 500!

WeeMrsH profile image
WeeMrsH in reply toLizzielizzielizzie

This is the thing, I suspect their price will not include any counselling. But we’d get the results quickly (well as quick as we can get ourselves to Greece). Sorry it’s not been good news for you guys x

Hi there

Myself and hubby had these blood tests carried out at our own doctors who had been more than willing to help us out and we have got many other bloods carried out there also to avoid costs. I just had to get a letter from my consultant who am seeing privately to state it is necessary for us to have this bloods done.

Thanks, yes I’m awaiting a letter from our consultant at the fertility clinic so hopefully that will see us back with our GP x

We have had them done privately for my OH. Took 3 weeks for them to be done privately (cost £480 and they were sent to an NHS lab to be done). We then had them done a second time through the NHS genetics clinic for free and it took 8 weeks (but we had to be referred to a specialist to get that done) x

Hi, my partner has literally just had the test results back for these, but we got told if private for karyotyping, chromosome deletion and cystic fibrosis we got told £500 private, so sadly I don't know the breakdown of karyotyping on its own but we went through NHS in the end and it took 20 days for karotyping results and 28 days for the other two. Luckily we were all clear 😊 Hope this helps and wish you luck! Xx

Hi (first post here), my private clinic recommended to have one + fragile x (following premature ovarian insufficiency diagnosis) and I managed to get the karyotype through NHS (I think it would otherwise cost about £300). However it took about 1.5/2 months for the NHS results to be ready as it's a complex test (and also cause nhs lost track of my fragile x results in the last two weeks/I had to chase them a lot!). My doctor at the private clinic was aware of the test lenght. The wait seemed so long also because I was reading that some clinics give you the results in 2/3 weeks. My advice is then to survey some private clinics and see how much it could be. If they give u the results quicker than nhs, go with it so you won't delay starting ivf treatment.

Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for the info. Did your GP do the karotyping themselves or did you need them to refer you to a specialist? (Which would add to the waiting time)? I think we are going to get it done privately if nothing else for the speed. We are going to see our GP once we get the referral from our current fertility consultant and can work it from here how long NHS would take x
