Am starting a new job in nhs hospital and am going through ivf . Should I tell my new manager about it ?? Do nhs hospitals have ivf policy ?? When should I use it ?? During my probation or after ?? If there is any nurse going through ivf can I get an advice on how u planned it ?? The problem is my ivf center in turkey and I have to fly for my egg collection and stay for embryo transfer

Hi Lady

I am a nurse too. Not sure where you are but I'm in Scotland and there is no ivf policy. 1 of my friends who is also a nurse told her manager and got a rotten time so for our 1st I decided to just get a sick line from the gp. This started when I was told that egg collection was only a day or so away. Gp was great and gave me 4 weeks. 2nd attempt I just told a porky and said I was getting a bathroom fitted that the date had been brought forward to had to reschedule my annual leave. Going off sick really did help as towards the egg coll I was being scanned everyday or 2nd day so it was a relief to not have the pressure of work. Unfortunately both our attempts have ended in mc so it's back to the drawing board for us. Good luck x

I am a nurse in Scotland and no there’s not a NHS Policy but my work we’re brilliant with me. The first couple of attempts I put my work first. The third time I got signed off by my gp for the two week wait and it helped. All I’m going to say is put yourself first because as you know we’re only numbers. They try to be understanding but at the end of the day it’s about staffing bla bla bla.

Good luck xxxx

I’m not a nurse but I do work in the NHS my trust has a policy for fertility treatment which basically says it’s down to the discretion of your manager in what they do in terms of giving you time off. I was honest with my manager about my treatment and said I wanted to take some time off she was really understanding and said she didn’t want me using my annual leave as I’d already been using quite a bit for appointments etc in the end I just got a sick note for 4 weeks. I’ve only been back in work 2 days since as I ended up getting an infection from my treatment and being admitted to hospital and have had to take more time off. I work in education centre and my job can be quite be physical I knew having time off would be best for me and do glad I did as I got my BFP :-) good luck with your treatment and hope your able to get something sorted xxxx

Hi. I'm a nurse too . Our policy says we can have ivf day procedures as special leave. So my egg collection was special leave and the rest was sick leave. Had to take 2 weeks after egg collection due to OHSS. That cycle was incomplete.

2nd try egg transfer special leave then 3 weeks off sick after as I had MC.

I have all my dates in advanced . I book appointments for first thing in the morning . Then I arranged with my mangers to come In abit late on scan/blood test days and make up the time after work.
