Hard Decision Not to Go Through With IVF

Hi all,

My husband and I finally made it to the top of the waiting list at our private clinic, but have unfortunately made the difficult decision not to go through with it. We are expats living here in the UK, and our visas to reside here expire at the end of the year. So when calculating the time it would take to go through the medicated cycle, wait one cycle (since my AMH levels are high), and then do our first FET after that, we didn't want to take the risk of having to leave before we could have a successful transfer - in case anything goes wrong or off schedule.

The other looming question was what we would do with the likely remaining embryos (we'd have to travel back to the UK for more FETs, or pay an extra 3000-4000 pounds to transport them overseas).

We've know about our infertility for 2 years now, and its frustrating that now that we finally have a chance to do IVF, we still need to wait. If it weren't for the pandemic, I'm sure we wouldn't be in this position. But we think that there would be a lot less stress and risk if we start the process over once we settle in my home country of Japan (where IVF is a lot cheaper!!), and there shouldn't be as long of a waiting list since there are a lot more options of clinics.

I guess I'm posting this to get some affirmation that this is the right decision... but in the meantime we are going to keep trying to improve my husbands sperm motility. We've been on supplements and a healthy-ish diet for 3 months now, and he's going in for an analysis in a few weeks - fingers crossed that we see improvement!!

Best of luck to all of you going through the IVF process!

Are you paying privately or was it to be funded by the nhs

Reason I’m asking is essentially you could do it anywhere in the world quicker than waiting in the U.K.

We went to Greece and had a quick turn around time wise.

Thanks treezuk. We would have been going through a private clinic as NHS would have been another 6-8 months of waiting anyway. We will be moving to Tokyo where there are a lot more options of clinics, the waiting lists are not nearly as long, and it's a fraction of the cost.

Ah okay that makes sense at least that way you can do it without coming back and forth - good luck x

Hello 👋

I think you are making the right decision.

I know it must be difficult knowing that you have to wait even longer, but like you said it will give you time to increase husbands sperm motility. Also, you will have some more time to research facilities in Japan, you could also make contact with them to get the ball rolling and to make you feel like you’re not just waiting around. The end of the year is closer than it feels.

I wish you greatest luck and hope you and your husband get your little person very very soon.

Thank you so much for the assurance. I’ve been second guessing the decision but I’m feeling more and more like we won’t regret this decision.

Hello it sounds to me like you are making the right decision. My FET was delayed due to covid and we took the time to improve our diets then went for a fresh and got much better sperm and egg quality than before. Use the time to improve your chances and good luck xx

Really excited to see if the diet and supplements have done anything! I hope so 🙏

Hi lovely. Many women here want to start as soon as possible. Therefor waiting till the end of the year seems far. But as you mentioned you are private so i do think you will get your moneys worth abroad rather than in the uk where you can do add ons etc which can increase your chances. IF money isnt a problem i would say you have time for a short protocol if you start now. I guess folow your heart lovely xx
