Hi Ladies!

Just had confirmation yesterday that EC is tomorrow, really excited but have now feel sick to my stomach with nerves! What should I expect on the day - really scared of the general anaesthetic!

I have mine tomorrow too. I'm terrified, so I'd be really interested to hear these responses. Does anyone know if it's OK to eat beforehand?

I was told to fast from midnight tonight as I'm getting a general anaesthetic. Good luck to you tomorrow, let me know how you get on!

I know all clinics are different but here's how mine went... Arrived about an hour before the appointment, nothing to eat from midnight and nothing to drink (glass of water 2 hours before was ok but no tea/coffee/juice etc).

Your partner will hand over their sample or produce it on site... They go through your name and DOB about 20 times lol, you get asked to put your gown and hair net on, get taken through to procedure room.

The anaesthetist will come and chat to you, there will be one or two others in the room who witness your name and DOB confirmation. The doctor performing the collection will then come and talk to you.

Once that is all done they will ask you to lie back and put your legs in the stirrups, your partner will be asked to leave, they strap your legs in the stirrups and give you the sedative (mine was just a sedative not general anaesthetic so I was awake as soon as they were done). Then they sit you up and put you in a wheelchair and take you back to your room...

Think I have covered everything there! It is nothing to worry about just try and relax as much as possible, honestly it is nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, good luck xxxx

Hi Sprinkles86,

Thanks so much for your reply! you've put my mind at ease, seems as though its over and done with quite quickly.

Just need to get past the worry of the general anaesthetic now...

Aw good I'm glad I was able to help! Have they said why you need a general anaesthetic rather than just sedation? Xx

Not too sure tbh, I thought it was just standard practice with that hospital when they advised - will ask tomorrow xxx

May take you a little longer to recover if you are having a general, just means you can take it easy for a couple of days xxx

Hi Stargaze89

I was terrified of having the general anaesthetic completely built it up in my head and I promise you it was absolutely fine. They tell you to count backwards, you fall asleep, then you come around and you won't remember even falling asleep. I didn't feel much pain afterwards but they gave me co-codamol and then a bit sensitive for a couple days and that was it. Remember your slippers and a book. Good luck, you'll be fine! x

Hi Lucy01244,

Thanks for your reply! Reading all these comments are making me feel at ease about the whole thing. Definitely piece of mind I needed! Got my books, magazines and long nighty at the ready! lol

Mine was slightly different - it was in at 2pm so I was told I can have light meals. I had to use suppository about an hour or so before the procedure and took the sedative (temasopam) about 20 minutes before going into theatre. I don't know what the sedative did except make me a bit drowly way after the procedure! But I think the suppository worked because they kept saying I will feel a scratch when they administered a local anaesthetic to the vaginal wall, but I didn't feel anything...

I was competely awake and aware and chatting to the dr, the nurse and my partner who was allowed to stay with me. I did start feeling some pain when the dr went in for the second ovary, and asked for the gas and air which was offered from the very beginning. They collected 13 eggs in the end and the procedure took about 20 minutes but felt much quicker (I was enjoying the gas and air!)

So while I wouldn't want to repeat the whole thing again anytime soon, the anticipation was really a lot worse particulalry as I knew I'll only be . I think if you are on general anaesthetic it will go even quicker! best of luck x

That sounds awful being awake during it, I don't know if its a bit of a blessing i'm being put to sleep although I am really worried about it. Think I would be worried either way tbh! lol xxx

It's just high sedation that makes you have a nap. I woke up, chatted to nurse and drank my water and ate toast and was out within hour or so from getting to sleep. lol. Nothing to worry about at all. I was like you the day before and morning of it but its honestly fine, I was quite crampy that day and went home and lay in bed and slept a few times. I went back to work (office based) the next day. Though I did work at home just so wasn't having to put on face with the cramps.

You will be fine. It's over and done with quickly honestly. Then enjoy your weekend and await the 3 or 5 day transfer 😊 xx

I was really nervous as well but it honestly wasnt bad at all I had a general. even the needle in the hand was fine. OH stayed until i was taken into the room and I had a chat with the anesthetist he was lovely and put my mind at rest then they lie you down and put a mask on your face and they said you might feel a little woosey then you will just fall asleep. Then i woke up no pain at all ate toast then went home! really it was no problem at all and I would not be worried about doing it again xx

Thanks Ladies, all went well. Was under sedation and not general aesthetic as I previously thought. Still a bit sore but hopefully wears off by tomorrow. Thanks for all your lovely comments!! :) xxx
