I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice. For the last 5 months, I have had all the tests done, have had a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy done. The funding has been approved for one free ivf cycle. I have only recently been referred to the fertility centre and was wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect at my first appointment with the consultant and how long the process is till egg collection?
thanks

Hi it all really depends on the clinic you go to. Our first appointment (after we were referred from our local hospital and had all the tests we needed there) was purely for blood and semen tests. We were given lots of consent forms and filled them all in for our second appointment. Some clinics offer an open day but we opted to have a longer 2nd appointment instead as our clinic is 1.5 hrs away. The second appointment we met our consultant, he went through our results from the tests, talked through the process in general, what options we had and what treatment he was going to put me on. Then he went through dates and put a plan together (which can all change depending on how you react to drugs etc). He did an internal scan for me (not painful but similar to a smear) and went through our forms. We came away feeling like we understood a lot more and are much more relaxed. If you're not sure I would give the clinic a call and ask them what to expect to put your mind at ease. Our third appointment is when I get given my injections to take, all being well there will be a scan at 4th appointment to see how I react to the injections and if that goes to plan Egg and semen collection will be at the 5th appointment. This will be approx 2.5-3 months since our 1st appointment but I think it really depends on what medication you're put on to start with and where in your cycle you are. Don't worry though, it will fly in and soon you'll be wondering where the time went!!! This forum is great for answering questions or just having a good rant!
Thank you . .yes this forum is good for advice as lots of couples have already been through the process . . We have our first appointment on 3rd March, it seems to be a counselling session first, then speak to nurse about ordering drugs and signing consent forms. My husband appointment for his sperm isn't until May, so that might be when they are likely to do ICSI transfer??
I will get some questions together for then . . people have recommended the long protocol, but I do not know the difference so will ask the question at the appointment . .thanks for your reply !
I've been trying to post for days to ask this question but for some reason won't let me post have you got your first appointment yet?? We only signed our funding papers a few days before Christmas and we have out first appointment on Tuesday 26th January. We are using the satellite clinic at our local hospital and will only go to our chosen clinic for egg collection and transfer. I wish you all the best on your journey x
Hi, Yes have our first appointment on 3rd March, it seems to be a counselling session first, then speak to nurse about ordering drugs and signing consent forms. My husband appointment for his sperm isn't until May, so that might be when they are likely to do ICSI transfer?? Its been a long process as our hospital that referred us kept messing up and had said they had sent our referral months ago and they hadn't. The fertility clinic only received our referral last week and thats why we have an appointment through for March.
I will get some questions together for then . . people have recommended the long protocol, but I do not know the difference so will ask the question at the appointment . .thanks for your reply !
Well we didn't expect our appointment this quickly all seems like the journey is now officially real!!! I have a list of questions as long as my arm for tomorrow!!! At least by this time tomorrow I'll know what's what xx
