itching!!

Hi all,

Had my dating scan this week, currently 13+4. All looked good with a very active baby and my screening has come back all low risk which has been a huge help for my anxiety.

But the last week or so I have been itching and it’s driving me mad! Around my stomach I can understand as I’m starting to get a bit of a bump, but it’s also my back, my boobs, my arms, my upper legs and scalp. I have also got a couple of small patches of what I think is eczema, however there are no rashes or sore looking skin on the rest of my body.

I have read there is a liver condition you can develop which causes itching but that’s later in pregnancy.

I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this, is it normal? Is there anything I can do to relieve this? I have tried E45 itch relief but the relief is temporary.

Thanks in advance!

Hi lovely. Obstetric cholestasis is the condition you've heard of - and it usually starts around 28 ish weeks, though can be earlier. Often the most severe itching is on palms and soles. I would think you're probably too early, but if you're worried it might be worth going to your GP?

Hormonal changes can cause itching, and they can also cause eczema even if you don't usually have it! I had to change detergent once I got pregnant for this reason!

I really hope you can get it sorted, but otherwise massive congratulations on your pregnancy xx

Yeah that’s the one I read about! It’s pretty much everywhere except my hands and feet 🙈 I’m sure it isn’t that it’s just driving me mad. I’m worried I’m going to irritate my skin further with the constant itching.

I think I’m going to try my GP tomorrow to be on the safe side or see what they can recommend.

Thanks for your response and for the congratulations ❤️ xx

Hi sorry to hear this, not much to add other than to say our daughter only gets eczema when pregnant, in fact this time that was how she knew she was pregnant as it started really early! I can't remember what it is that she uses but it's literally changed her life since she tried it. She's at work ATM but I'll ask her when she's back home and let you know, she tried so many creams and lotions last time, including from her GP but nothing touched it until she tried this one, just wish I could remember which it was now for you x

It's Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Emollient Cream 150 ml don't know if it'll work for you but it works amazingly well for her, she's 27 weeks now xx

I had itching too and as annoying as it was it didn't amount to any health issues. Still Don't know the cause but I put it down to hormones. All the best.xx

I have awful hormonal itching also. I use a mix of shea butter and body cream after every shower and before bed and it hasn't gotten rid of it completely, but it's seemed to help!
