Iron tablets causing bloating?

Hi, has anyone else had to start taking iron tablets whilst pregnant? I’ve been taking them for a few days now and today woken up feeling extremely bloated!

Anyone know ways to ease this? Is it normal with these tablets?

Thank you in advance

Iron tablets can cause upset in your digestive system such as constipation ,feeling sick and bloating Best to take pills with food in the evening Also do not take antacids or caffeine drinks ie tea ,coffee or coke as the same time or within 2 hrs of taking your iron tablet - drink plenty of water to avoid constipation Try to eat more vegetables

It’s a really common side effect, with my son I had low iron and dizzy spells and they upped my dose and I had to tell them I couldn’t do it! They gave me liquid iron for a bit which helped build up my reserves with less constipation but unfortunately with both the HCG slowing things down and the iron it’s basically pregnancy life! Your midwife can prescribe a laxative that’s safe though if you need one xx

Ah thank you for this - I will ask. I’m finding that the constipation is the worst, and is actually making me still have spotting due to the strain. (Sorry tmi)

Thanks for your reply x

I absolutely hate taking iron - I used to have to take three tablets a day when I was younger as I've always had low reserves. What helped me was to take it with orange juice (vitamin c helps iron absorb better) and drink lots of water. If you're only taking one tablet, take it at night to reduce symptoms. My acupuncturist also said drinking beet juice can help with constipation (although it makes your wee a funny color).
