Hi,

Just wondering what supplements everyone is taking during pregnancy? I’ve been taking the Pregnacare ‘trying for a baby’ which is for conception but I’m wondering if I need to swap it to an actual pregnancy one?

That’s a lot!! I’m going to have a look online and see which would be the best one for me. My clinic just said as long as you’re taking the folic acid and vitamin D they’re the main ones but I’d feel better making sure I’m getting all the other good stuff! X

Yep switch to a pregnancy one! It'll have more iron and other good things. Although you're fine to use up your current packet if you want to. Folate rather than folic acid is good to watch out for, too, and making sure you're getting the right amount of Vit D.

Pregnanacare uses the synthetic folic acid rather than naturally occurring methyl folate. The latter is better as some women reject the synthetic kind. So you might want to look into a different brand of supplements although if you got pregnant on the synthetic kind then you should be okay.

My clinic also said just folic acid and vit D, and avoid too much vit A. But I wanted to make sure I was covering all bases - I found anything specifically for pregnancy or conception tended to have a big mark-up, especially if a well known brand, and when I looked at own brand 'skin, hair and nails' vits, they actually seemed to have the same or more of the good stuff but not as expensive - might be something to investigate. I also carried on with folate (not just folic acid), omegas, ubiquinol and combined b vits - plus gallons of full fat milk - so probably completely over the top. I also had a very large baby in the end so you may want to reconsider what I went with :)

Hey! I think they say you can finish up the ‘trying to conceive’ vitamines first but then switch indeed towards the actual pregnancy ones. I stuck to pregnacare as couldn’t be bothered to check all other brands if it has the same stuff.

I am also taking additional vit D (1000 iu), magnesium (always seems low in % of daily intake in any multi vitamine) and as I am prone to iron deficiency I was already on ‘liquid iron sachets’ from Spatone. I take that with a small glass of orange juice before breakfast and now taking 2 sachets as a double dose in pregnancy.

It seems to keep my iron levels up and not feeling so tired so it might be working well. Definitely recommend that if your bloodtests show lowish levels of iron as it is much more gentle on your bowels than iron tablets. Better prevent low levels than trying to cure it is my thought.

I hope this helps!
