Stopping medications turning into a stressful situation...

Dear everyone, Can you please tell me what did your clinic suggested to stop medications? My clinic said 12 weeks and when I called the obstetrician today to see if I have to carry on with blood thinners he said he normally suggest at least 14 weeks... but he wouldnt prescribe any medications as I am not under his care yet as he didnt see me yet, and my clinic says they only suggest until 12 weeks and I am not under their care anymore so the can't prescribe me anymore and nobody is telling me if I should carry on with blood thinners... 😔 I have medications until next Thursday and nobody is telling me what to do... 😔

Can anybody have any suggestion?

Hi. Now you are twelve weeks, your body will be taking over, producing everything you need to support your baby withe the exception of Folic acid. Check with your GP or midwife about blood thinners. Hope all continues as it should. Diane

Thank you Diane! I can't reach my midwife for days, couldnt get a GP appointment, they said to call monday morning but not 100% I can get an appointment as its very difficult to get one and my Claxane runs out next Thursday so not sure what to do if I can't get the appointment... :(

Hi, first of all congratulations. I am 12 weeks today and when my clinic discharged me after the 7 week scan they told me to stop my medication at 12 weeks. Cold turkey!!

They told me to check whether I should also stop the blood thinning injection at my 12 week scan which was on Thursday. The midwife said I can stop but I should go on to 150mg of aspirin a day. Xx

Thank you very much!! So they will tell me on my 12 weeks scan if I need to carry on with the blood thinners?

Yes they should do. They looked through my maternity notes and said I only had 2 ticks against the risk rating and they see no reason for me to continue. I’ll start the aspirin tomorrow once I’ve taken my last Inhixa today. I am really nervous about stopping everything, especially as there’s so many different approaches used by clinics etc. But I guess I got to try and just trust the professionals and my body now. Xx

I stopped most meds between 12-16 weeks but I carried on blood thinners the whole pregnancy and stopped 6 weeks after he was born.

hello and congratulations! 💛

I stopped all medications - cold turkey - at 12 weeks. My wonderful son is now 3 months old 🥰

I know stopping meds is stressful so speak with your clinic if you can - I am sure they will reassure you - at 12 weeks placenta takes over.

Sending love

Exactly the same experience for me as Crie1983. Clinic advised stop clexane at 12 weeks. Then at my 12 week scan a week later at 13 weeks the midwife advised to start 150mg of baby aspirin.

My midwife told me doctors are afraid of pregnancy and won’t prescribe anything unless a consultant advises them to! 🙈

Because I had no blood apparent clotting issues, just some genetic predispositions (PAI-1 4G/5G), I stopped my heparin and aspirin after 12 weeks when I ran out. I'm 23 weeks now and baby is happily kicking around. Although, my IVF Dr said I can continue with baby aspirin if I wanted to.

I have the same genetic predisposition. I hope you don't mind me asking did you have any qualms about stopping when you did? I'm really worried about it but nobody seems to want to prescribe me continuation of blood thinners x

We were indeed a little worried about stopping cold turkey, but it just so happened the Clexane ran out first and aspirin a week later, so it wasn't all that scary and I'm so happy I don't have to self-inject anymore! My NHS midwife recommended baby aspirin to prevent pre-eclampsia b/c of my age but I haven't fallen back on medications and I'm fine - my blood pressure is actually down due to pregnancy, which is normal. In my case they were prescribed as prophylactics - i.e. "just in case" for all patients over 40 in my IVF clinic, not because of my PAI-1 gene, which my dr did know about.

Thank you very much for all the replies! I feel much more relaxed now! Probably won't be when I actually stop, but for now... 😅

Thankfully I managed to talk to a different consultant and he said he will prescribe me 150mg Aspirin because of my age (40), its to be started any time between 12-16weeks... I havent received my prescription yet so it will be about 14 weeks when I will start them...

Thank you for replying. So will you be taking just Aspirin from that point, no clexane? X

MagicTourmaline profile image
MagicTourmaline in reply toSkittles11

Yes, only Aspirin... do you have any reason why you think you should carry on with the clexane?

My clinic have recommended me to based on gene mutations which can increase risk of thrombophilia. But they don't want to prescribe past 12 weeks despite their own recommendation. And NHS have their own risk factor criteria which does not include these gene mutations so they don't think I need it x

Can you seek a 3rd opinion?

Or maybe ask your doctor if they can prescribe you Aspirin instead... I dont know whats the difference in strength but at least it would be more than nothing... 🤔
