For the FET, taking Aspirin, when did you stop taking it (which weeks of pregnancy)?

Hi everyone, I have some questions related to Aspirin.

I had a miscarriage two years ago (it was a natural pregnancy), the cause of it possibly due to chromosomes abnormal. Just in case, I took Aspirin for my first FET to make sure no blood was blocked, and my fertility clinic agreed to it. 

I have taken it for almost 3 months and now I am almost 12 weeks pregnant. I did 3 ultrasound scans so far and my baby is doing well. I do not have any bleeding or side effects after taking Aspirin.

I did a thrombophilia blood test before FET to check for any blood clotting issues. The result showed I did not have any blood clot issues.

My fertility clinic's doctor advised me to stop taking Aspirin at 13 weeks.However, I notice the NHS maternity note advises me to take Aspirin throughout the pregnancy (due to IVF pregnancy they said). I am confused here. 

I will discuss this matter to the NHS in the coming days. My heart is to go for the plan, stop it at 13 weeks and I trust my fertility clinic's doctor.

**If not stop taking Aspirin, continue taking it, did you lose more blood during labour? Aspirin can thinner the blood which means it can cause more bleeding if you have any wounds.

in my last pregnancy I stopped aspirin at 12/13 weeks - but I’ve heard a lot of ladies continue till week 34 (so still stop before labour).

I’m not sure this time - I’m on Clexane injections , meant to stop those at 12 weeks (can’t wait - they’re horrible!) but don’t know if to then switch to aspirin or just stop altogether. I’ll ask x

Yes, I've heard a lot of ladies continue taking Aspirin too. It is good to discuss it with consultant. 👍🏻

I was told to take 1 x baby aspirin (75mg) until 12 weeks and then up that to 2 after 12 weeks to minimise risk of preeclampsia.

I would speak to your midwife about it - or your consultant if you are consultant led. Typically your fertility clinic only advise anything you to 12 weeks as they legally discharge you after that date. Their job is to get you pregnant - it’s then over to your midwife or consultant from there.

This level of aspirin shouldn’t cause issues with blood loss during labour. Many people have blood thinners abs aspirin and are fine

Thank you. That's a good point, advance age pregnancy may have a higher risk of preeclampsia. I would definitely speak to consultant about it.

I was advised the same as daisy. I took 75mg of aspirin after my fet until about 8ish weeks and then was advised to increase this to 150mg by midwives. I will stop when I give birth. I’m also on blood thinning injections which they aren’t overly concerned about and I just have to stop those the day before my section.

They advise a higher dose of aspirin mainly to reduce the risk of preeclampsia (I had a high background risk).

Although it hasn’t stopped me getting preeclampsia, if you do have an increased risk, i would take anything to avoid it because it’s rather miserable.

I’ve had no side effects from the aspirin at all and it doesn’t really impact me that I know of. In my experience of midwives, if they want you to take meds, they are pretty clear about it and why if you ask. Best of luck!

Thanks for sharing. I am 40 and that maybe the reason they advised me to take Aspirin to reduce the risk of preeclampsia. I requested a planned c-section, just concern about whether I will lose many blood if I continue Aspirin. I will discuss this with consultant.

if I remember, they did a screening for it in my booking app and that’s when they recommended the higher dose. I’m 40 too with strong family history and a bmi over 30 when booking. Whenever I see anyone they ask if my family had it too though so I recon that’s my biggest risk.

I have a planned section and have been told to stop aspirin and blood thinners the day before. They don’t have a long half life so it shouldn’t be an issue with haemorrhaging as will be well out of body by then! I asked what happens if I go into labour before hand while still taking the drugs and the consultant said I can have a section without issue and they will manage the risks as they would for anyone having spontaneous labour and a section on blood thinners (they are commonly prescribed apparently). My family doesn't have high blood pressure and my bmi is 21. My midwife originally didn't put me in the high risk, however she mentioned my age 40, she arranges me to have regular ultrasound scan starting from 28weeks and also I request a planned c-section so she put me in the high risk now. The midwife wrote a note advice to take the Aspirin but she didn't say how many dose should take. I am currently taking 100mg per day.

I will have the NHS screening ultrasound scan this coming week and I will discuss it with my consultant.

In the US they recommend baby aspirin (81mg) throughout pregnancy as it supports better placenta blood flow and helps prevent pre-eclampsia. I've taken for 3 pregnancies and no issues with delivery on the first 2.

I stopped Aspirin after 12w. I also don't have blood clot issue at all but we went for blood thinning during my 3rd IVF round and it worked. I had Clexane (injected blood thinning) from transfer day all the way to 12w and added Aspirin from confirmed pregnancy (official test date) to 12w. It's baby aspirin, so very low dose but that is the protocol NHS clinic went for. I know from reading on here that many people who had Clexane didn't have aspirin, and many had both until 12w.

Thanks for sharing. I didn't have Clexane injections. I've taken 100mg Aspirin approx. 2.5 weeks before FET and almost 3 months now.

I took 75mg up to 12 weeks then midwives upped it to 150mg from then until 36 weeks. I was on clexane as well until 12 weeks.. and now again after having my little one, they gave me 6 weeks worth. All the best x

Hi,

I’m also on aspirin and was told to take 150mg at my booking in appointment. Also an older Mum to be, so it’s to reduce the risk of preeclampsia for me. I’m currently week 17 😊 no side affects whatsoever xx

congratulations on your pregnancy. I’m 16 weeks pregnant and I’ve been prescribed 150mg aspirin for 12 weeks followed by heparin at week 28. Will be reviewed then. Check with your clinic if you should continue.

Thanks for sharing. They also advice me to take 150mg of Aspirin till 36wks. It is for reducing the risk of preeclampsia and kidneys failure (these are common issue for advance age mother).
