Loss of appetite 3rd trimester

Hello, just wondering if anyone else has lost their appetite in the 3rd trimester? Currently 29 weeks and going off food again like I did in the 1st trimester but without the sickness (thank goodness!). I’m also struggling to eat my regular portions as I’m getting full a lot quicker. I’m not sure if my appetite is smaller because I’m doing less so not really working up an appetite?

im just a bit worried as I know I should be getting a few extra calories during 3rd trimester and I’m not even sure if I’m eating the bare minimum. Anyone else struggled with this?

Hi ZiggyandBC, as baby gets bigger other organs get squished so your stomach is get smaller the more pregnant you become. I am almost 31 weeks and no longer have same size meals I did pre pregnancy, instead I eat something every 2-3 hours my desk draw in work is full of healthy snacks. Try changing your eating habits to little and often x

Yes I had this, although I also had periods where the sickness returned. I was told off at a midwife appointment for having ketones in urine due to not getting enough calories and body starting to burn fat - total opposite to the weight gain I was expecting. I explained the difficulty with appetite etc and was advised to eat smaller portions of higher calorie foods, even of that meant adding in a mars bar! :) I couldn't stomach mars bars so added in flapjacks and even more full fat milk, and grazed more on choc/yoghurt covered nuts, raisins etc. The baby was really big throughout and when born, and even if you can't manage much I think the extra calories you need is actually pretty small, so if you're keeping up with fluids and vits, sure it will get everything it needs. Oh and if you breastfeed, your appetite will return with a vengeance so stock up on flapjacks! x

Yep yep, I could only eat tiny meals but did not then want to eat between them. I was on 1100-1200 cals a day (I started to count after I got worried) around 28-34 ish weeks. I discussed with midwife and she just said babies are basically parasites and take what they need, so baby would be fine and I’d feel crap. She said just make sure to only eat high quality, energy dense but highly nutritious food so every calorie counts. She suggested those milkshake energy “meal in a can” type things alongside meals (brain fart on the name, like slimfast but high calorie) but I’m intolerant to milk. It did get better, I think perhaps he moved, but then the insane indigestion started (gaviscon is your friend!!). Xx

Hi ZiggyandBC, I think the rule is little and often while you are uncomfortable. Your midwife will ensure you are getting enough nutriments. Diane
