I’ve got a subchorionic hematoma 9+1

I trusted my instincts and went for another scan tonight as I just didn’t feel right with the increased amount of beige brown discharge liquid I’ve had last night and today and I’ve got a 3cm subchronic hematoma. I could even see the blood flowing around by the tear on the scan it’s crazy. I had a scan on Friday and it definitely wasn’t there, so she thinks it was probably so small that it wasn’t visible but might explain why my discharge has got progressively worse in the past few weeks. Baby was bouncing around and measuring exactly. So now I’m pleased I know what it is, but of course worried that this may impact my pregnancy and how long it will take to resolve. She said there’s nothing I can do and it usually resolves by 12 weeks, and to just rest and take it easy so I’ll have to not commute to work I guess and just try to rest as much as possible. Has anyone else had this with an IVF pregnancy? I hope it doesn’t threaten the health/progression of the baby developing and continuing. It’s hard not to worry x

Yes, I had multiple areas of haematoma in this pregnancy and bled on & off until just over 13 weeks ish. Stayed on progesterone until 16 weeks and thankfully things settled. Baby now 33 weeks which is just crazy. Hang in there & hopefully things settle for you really soon.x. Very common in IVF pregnancies I was told.x I would love to say I didn’t worry but it’s impossible not to so we just took it day by day & I really minimised my exercise until things settled down. x

Thank you, it’s hard not to just assume the worst! I’m glad yours has resolved itself. I really hope mine doesn’t get bigger but I guess will just have to keep an eye on it, going to really take it easy for the next few days to see if that helps a bit then go for another scan maybe Monday to see how it’s doing.

Did you do bedrest when you had it? How far along were you when yours started? It’s so reassuring your pregnancy is progressing well x

Started at 6 weeks. I was advised to take it easy but not bed rest as won’t change anything and you are more likely to get a big gush if you get up after being horizontal for a long spell if that makes sense. As difficult as it is, we were advised not to repeat scan unless there was a significant change as measurements can vary a lot and may end up worrying you more than reassuring you. It’s easy me saying this with hindsight as I literally wanted to check every day but thankfully my husband persuaded me to wait at least a week to give things time.x Sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

Thanks this is really helpful advice, the clinic have told me today to stop taking the baby aspirin? Did your clinic make you stop that too? X

in reply to PrincessGurn1984

Yes, I stopped it on the advice of the clinic too.

Ok thanks, that makes me feel better about stopping it. Why do we even take baby aspirin? Do you think it will affect the babies development by stopping it? X

in reply to PrincessGurn1984

Unless you have a known clotting disorder then I don’t think it’s necessary to be taking it in IVF, my consultant basically said if I wanted to it wouldn’t do any harm. As I don’t have a known clotting issue they are not concerned about babies development going forward. It’s such a minefield of information out there I just decided to go with the clinics experience on this one.

How much did you rest? Like I’m trying to take it easy but I’m not sure if say walking to a coffee shop and getting a coffee is too much and will make it worse? Not sure what activity is reasonable x

in reply to PrincessGurn1984

I would say when I was bleeding I did usual activities around the house but took car to a coffee shop. Once the bleeding settled I gradually increased to dog walks & walks to coffee shops but we live in a rural area so walks tend to be longer. When bleeding started again I really reduced what I was doing & again when it settled I gradually increased activities. Had a bit of time off work when bleeding but back to work when it settled. I don’t think there is a right or wrong way.x

I had a haematoma that resulted in brown discharge for a couple of weeks around week 9 and then a short but intense bleed which was a bit scary. But no issues since then. Am now 35 weeks. Will keep everything crossed for you. It’s scary but good to know what’s causing it x

Thanks I’m so glad it didn’t affect your pregnancy! Did you have to stop taking baby aspirin? X

in reply to PrincessGurn1984

hello, I wasn’t taking it at that stage started later around 14 weeks. But no it didn’t stop me. Haematoma had disappeared by 12 week scan. X

Oh that’s interesting so you didn’t take baby aspirin at all during the first trimester? I thought that was just standard in IVF pregnancies? X

in reply to PrincessGurn1984

ummm nope. I was on estrogen and progesterone and thyroxine. Lots of combos of the above! 🤣

Well that’s good and makes me feel even better as sounds like I don’t even need to be taking it anyways 😂

I had the same at 14 weeks, significant bleed then ongoing spotting for about 4 weeks. Worried me all the way through my pregnancy (I was ivf too) but baby delivered safely at 37.2 weeks 💕 take the advice, rest, no lifting, no exercise just focus on you x

Brill congratulations! Did they change your meds? My clinic have advised to stop taking the baby aspirin, do you think that causes it? X

no it won’t be a difference, epas told me to stop it for 2 days but when I spoke to the consultant (I phoned as I wasn’t happy! Said to restart as aspirin is for placenta health, it makes the blood flow better so not to stop. I was also in anticoagulant injections and they said to continue these also as prescribed as it was for clotting for me so also important. Maybe try to contact your consultant or midwife for more advice? These types of hematomas are usually under the corner of the placenta which is why I was told to continue with the aspirin. Other than that I was told there was nothing they could do if it got bigger. Try not to worry but rest and no lifting xx

It’s my consultant that has told me to stop taking the baby aspirin, they said it won’t affect the health of the baby but that’s a good point you make about it being the blood flow to the placenta. I guess from their perspective baby aspirin thins your blood so it’s probably making my bleed worse and if I stop taking it then it might help the haematoma to heal? X

it’s a strange one but I was told baby aspirin is such a low dose wouldn’t thin the blood, if it was the normal aspirin that would make a difference. I was told to think about the hematoma like a bruise thats oozing, and bleeding out.. the hope was (for me) that the bleeding tapered off (so it almost drained itself) and what was left reabsorbed with time. If it was small enough it wouldn’t impact the placentas function.l Best to speak to them again if you think it would be useful x x

Did you go on bed rest or sofa rest? I’m struggling to know what to do for the best. Don’t want to make it worse but equally I’d like to have a semi normal life and go for a walk or visit a friend at her house for a cuppa! Take my parents to lunch that kind of thing x

sofa rest, I work from home ( the covid effect ) so it was easier to relax.. I stopped lifting shopping, hoovering, stopped exercise etc anything that I felt put strain on my body. Walks are ok, not too long, visiting friends, lunch.. just no stress.. physical or otherwise xx
