variation in fetal movements

Hi ladies,

I hope you’re all doing ok. I wanted to find out if it’s normal to have variation in the frequency and intensity of baby’s movements day to day? The last couple of days baby has been quieter, movements more gentle. Whereas today he/she is having a riot in there! I’m 21 weeks. I’m struggling to find much online as most articles seem to refer to later in pregnancy. Any experience would be most welcomed!xx

I did with both and ended up in the pregnancy day care a few times with my first. With my second I wasn't as anxious so felt OK when we had our a quieter day where if it had been much more different then I would of called the midwife line xx

To put your mind at ease, speak to your midwife about your concerns but the movement can vary from day to day.

Take care

Janet

hey. I’m the same really at 33 weeks. Some days there are gentle kicks through the day, other day feels like a party in there! I had a little panic around 21 weeks so called the midwife who said that before 24 weeks movement would be really inconsistent and not to panic but I’m glad I called, and recommended it to you too! If only for a piece of mind!

that’s good advice lovely, thanks for replying xxx

My placenta is anterior again (this is my 2nd pregnancy) so the movements are less noticeable than with a posterior....

It is quite frustrating as I find the movements reassuring.

I am only 18 weeks so think I can be early for noticeable movements anyway.

I did go to the hospital a few times during my 1st pregnancy with queries over the movements and they were really helpful getting me checked quickly.

Oh hun that’s frustrating, hopefully they pick up soon as I agree they are so reassuring. Good luck for your 20 week scan!!x

Don't feel bad for contacting midwife or hospital anytime. They are very used to it

Hi Claire,

I've asked tge exact same question to my midwife today. I'm 28 weeks pregnant, usually I can feel them throughout the day and at night time when I turn over. Last week I had a night where I didnt feel anything at all. I spoke and seen tge midwife at the maternity assessment unit and was put on a monitor and all was good!

Since then I've had the odd day where the movements are less and a bit gentler. The midwife seems to think that that's dependent on the position of the baby - e. G. When it's facing inwards (baby back to my front) the movements are gentler than when it's facibg outwatds(back to back) which I guess makes sense.

She did stress though that if at any point I'm concerned, no matter how often and what time of day, to ring the hospital for reassurance!

Xx

Thank you, I need to stop worrying about bothering people with valid queries. So glad everything looked good for you yesterday. Not long until you meet your wee one!x

I could have wrote this myself! I’m 21 weeks tomorrow and experiencing the same. I have an anterior placenta but kicks have been pretty consistent for the last 2 weeks, having started feeling around 14 and half weeks. But the last couple of days, particularly today have been quieter. I’ll likely ring tomorrow for reassurance but just to say I know how you feel 💜xx

Sounds sensible, and Im sure everything will be fine. I would have definitely done the same today but baby has been soooo active all day it didn’t seem worth it! Good luck x

hi I just recently had a baby and I told my midwife this at about 23 weeks and she said it is normal at that early stage as baby has more room to move around so can change positions a lot! So movements can change I also had an anterior placenta which means placenta is at the front so can cushion a lot of the baby’s movements did they tell you what position your placenta is in at your 20 week scan x

Thanks Daisy. It’s posterior. That’s really good to know your midwife said it’s normal. since I posted this I’ve had loads of movement, typical!

hmm you’re quite early for such movement. I think I found it quite infrequent and random early on but if you’re worried you can get checked at the hospital - maybe ring your midwife and I bet they’ll suggest you go and have a check
