When to bstart buying things?

Hi everyone.

Hope everyone is doing well and able to keep cool in this warm weather.

I will be 16 weeks on Friday and just wondered when everyone started to buy the things they needed for the baby?

I am just about managing to keep my anxiety under control buy don't want to jinx things by ordering some of the big stuff we need.

20 week scan is the 19th August. Should I wait until after that?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

I think I started putting together a list of things from week 16-20. I did receive some free items after week 20 (crib, grooming set and some clothes) and purchased a bath/changing unit second hand as it was a very good deal but wanted to hold off buying much. Week 24 I ordered the travel system because it said it could take up to 10 weeks for delivery and I know there are supply issues, but then all the bits were delivered within 1 week! 🤷🏼‍♀️. I finished my registry by week 27 and started to buy some basics such as body suits and sleeping suits with the help of my experienced sister and tidied some of the clothes I have been given just to know what’s what… I have made a list of what needs to be in my hospital bag and baby bag and will buy things from week 30-32 onwards I think. I will be having a c-section (week 39 I believe) so I will have a deadline but you never know if she is going to turn up sooner. I hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply. You sound very organised, which I am not, but I do have the start of a list.

It's so annoying when they said it will take 10 weeks but it arrives much sooner. I am going to have to make some serious room for new things so arriving too early would a disaster.

It must be nice to know that you won't go past the date that your section is planned. My friend had a planned section last month and, although everyone is different, she said it was the best thing and she recovered really quickly afterwards.

Definitely happy to be given a date as being successful with conceiving etc was not easy as you can well imagine. Also being a new mum and bringing my husband along the learning process takes us time in itself, hence why we started a bit early. But if you already have one, I’m sure you will manage a lot quicker than we have done and would agree with Eb20: car seat and hospital bags first 🙂.

I think everyone is different on this - I had things for my hospital bag ready after about 30 weeks.

The big items we had were hand me downs from my brother. We didn't collect them until after the birth.

A car seat was essential pre- birth as they wouldn't let us leave the hospital.

Thank you for your reply.

I have a 3 year old and we were given all of the the big things from other people with him and they just kept it until we were ready to take them. Of course I kept absolutely nothing. Not one single thing so having to start again and I honestly can not remember for the life of me when I started buying things with my last pregnancy although I know it was pretty late on.

We are the same - but we hung onto things for a sibling!

So this time around It is all hiding in the attic!

Best of luck with your decision!

Whenever you feel comfortable xxx

I was very unsure there would be a sibling and have absolutely no storage but I'm actuallylooking looking forward to buying somethings new as didn't so that with my last pregnancy.

I know I will get there in the end.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Ah that's great - yes all our stuff is worn and grubby so I can identify with wanting new things 😀! Happy shopping! X

Hi lovely, firstly congrats! Everyone is obviously different but my turning point was the 20 week scan. Like you I was very anxious but I had a talk with myself and decided that I needed to enjoy the pregnancy a lot more and believe in my little fighter who was being stubborn on his 20week scan 🤣 finally managed to get him in a good position to do the checks after jumping down the corridors🤣If your like me you will make lots of lists and want to investigate different things before buying and it definitely takes time!

All the best for your scan and I hope after that you have the boost you need to get stuck in and enjoy getting lots of baby shopping xxx

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I think waiting until after the scan sounds like a plan.I do have a list and due to space issues I want to be sure to only get what we actually need and not fall into the rabbit hole of all cute baby things.

We have had two scans so far and the baby has been sleeping during both. Luckily they were in a nice position and they did eventually move during the first one but I will not be surprised if like yourself he decides to be a little stubborn at the next scan but we will see.

I second the comment re. the 20 week point. It was also nice to buy a gender specific outfit at that time (if you’re finding out the sex). I’m 34 weeks today and have found that since the 20 week point time has gone super quickly & I’ve definitely started panicking a little as I’m getting the last few bits! Xx

Thank you for your reply.

We already know its a boy as we had the Harmony test so I can buy gender specific but I think knowing that everything is fine after the 20 week scan will relax me a bit more amd allow me to start getting organised.

You don't have very long to go now. Have you manged to get everything you need? Hope you have been OK in this hot weather. Always feel for everyone I see who is much further on than me.

Hey 💗 hope your doing ok? I started buying little things after 12wks then some pink things after gender scan at 14wks once I’d bought I couldn’t stop and I was pretty much done early on which meant I’ve probably overbought 🫣. We purchased the pram but picked it up about a few weeks ago (am 37wks now) we only purchased the nursery furniture when we were ready to put it up!

I did make a list early and ticked it off found that very helpful.

Packed my hospital bag at 34/35wks because I had a panic lol.

Buy when you feel comfortable but I suggest getting a lot done in second trimester as it gets really hard into the third 🥴

Thank you for your reply.

I feel like I may end up being a but like that and once I start buying things I'll just want to buy every cute baby thing I see but think the second trimester advice sounds good.

Can I ask where you bought your pram and how far along when ypu ordered it?

You only have a few weeks left which is super exciting. Good luck with everything.

Hope you have been OK in the hot weather.

We went to an independent baby store as they still had the lower price on the egg pram at the time. Plus we could pick it up whenever we wanted. Bought it after 20wk scan I think 🤔 The heat has been unbearable and happy it’s dropping tonight!!!

I’ve not long at all 🫣xx

we waited until 20 weeks to tell anyone apart from the parents, the aniexty was awful! We did start buying a few bits like bins around maybe 12 weeks, but then more and more, it really helped to make it more real x

Thank you for your reply.

I was like you with my first pregnancy. We told family and close friends after our 12 week scan but no one else until after our 20 scan which we had at 19 weeks. This time around I have been showing very early and I was having to avoid people before my 12 week scan as I couldn't hide it very well so I was glad when we told everyone amd I didn't need to hide it as I feel massive already.

I hope your anxiety settled and you were able to enjoy your pregnancy. I jave just about been able to keep my anxiety under control and I've had to work hard as my last pregnancy was full of anxiety and fear that I needed this to be different.

I was terrified to buy anything! I didn't buy anything until I was almost 6wks before I was due. I'm sure that was an extreme thing but I completely understand the anxiety!xxx

Thank you for your reply.

I have to say that leaving it so late sounds a bit stressful but I do understand.

I think once I start I will be fine but it's just taking that leap and getting the first thing.

Ha ha ha yes it was a balance of freaking myself other either way!!🤣🤣🙈 Good luck.xxx

I couldn’t manage to go into a shop for the whole of my pregnancy and I put my Amazon list together around 7 months. I think we went to the baby shows and bought the big items at 6 months. It’s entirely up to you but I definitely had an aversion to buying stuff just in case!

Mummybear171923 profile image
Mummybear171923 in reply toPositivechangeplease

Thank you for your reply.

I am not a fan of actually going to the shops so will do a lot of mine online as well.

I didn't think about doing an Amazon list so may start to compile that soon ish and then I will be organised for when I ready to actually order things.

Positivechangeplease profile image
Positivechangeplease in reply toMummybear171923

Yes that way you don’t have to buy ahead but others can also buy for you. There’s also a free gift thing attached if you buy £20 of Amazon fulfilled items so make sure you get a code for that. I think I signed up for a load of mum things advertised on FB

I started to feel calmer once I could feel regular movement and that gave me the confidence to start shopping. Was terrified of jinxing it though

Mummybear171923 profile image
Mummybear171923 in reply toSw1234

Thank you for your reply.

I am certainly looking forward to being able to feel regular movements and I've been telling myself that I will be more relaxed then so I hope that that is true.

My placenta is posterior and I'm convinced I have been feeling tiny movements at times when I'm lying in bed and there is nothing else going for the last couple of weeks but I suppose it could just be little bits of wind 🤣

Hopefully with the position of my placenta I will feel regular movement early ish.

I think it’s a personal decision. I’m 20 weeks on Thursday and still haven’t bought anything and thinking about not until 26/28 weeks. I think it takes time to accept that this is happening. I spent years not allowing myself to look at baby things so it’s taking a while to unwind that mentality. If you see something you like buy it. If the time doesn’t feel right. Make a note of it. X

Mummybear171923 in reply to

Thank you for you reply.

I have had a very brief look at some of the bigger essentials but only.to view as I do not feel ready yet to actually order anything.

Someone else mentioned an amazon list which I think is a good idea and I should maybe just have another list of anything else I see but I haven'tbeen activelylooking for much as I was only trying to get a rough idea of how long things take to arrive when I looked.

I hope your pregnancy is going well and that you are coping OK in this hot weather.

Did you manage to get everything you needed on time?

My niece and nephew were both born 5/6 weeks early in the last couple of years so although my son was 13 days overdue I think I will be more nervous about this little one making a surprise appearance.
