When did people have viability scan?

I just wanted to know when people had their first scan? I have mine booked in for when I’m 7w3d but was thinking of asking to bring it forward. However then I’m nervous that they won’t see anything earlier and will cause me more worry. My last pregnancy which was the exact same dates as this one ended in a miscarriage (literally same transfer date/ test day and possible due date). Am I better just waiting?

Thank you

I had a very early private one at 5w2d because I'd had two losses before making it to 7w scan. I knew we may not see anything helpful but I just wanted to know there was something there and in the right place. They can't tell you much at all and I think it's very variable but we did get a heartbeat right at the end just as they were giving up (which the sonographer even seemed a bit surprised at). We also had our clinic scan at 6w4d as they brought it forward a little bit - to fit nurse's holidays, not us, but they can do it. Not sure it's recommended to do before 7 weeks as it seems to be a bit of luck if they can see much and it may just cause more worry if you have to go back, but purely from our experience and having gone in with low expectations, I'm glad we went early.

My clinic doesn't do scans before 6w2d and suggest having it at at least 6w6d in order to get a definitive answer and avoid stress (we had it as 6w6d as recommended).

As someone that had an unclear scan at 5w6d with my first IVF miscarriage, I really appreciated having the possibility of a clear cut viable/not viable answer rather than getting a "we will scan again in two weeks" response (I miscarried before that).

Of course, this is up to you and how you will cope better, but bringing it up 3-4 days will not harm anyone!

I know the wait is torture, especially when you’ve had a previous loss but if you can wait, it is better to have it at 7 weeks. Any earlier and you might not see a heartbeat and cause more stress xx

Hey! Firstly congrats 💗. I had my viability scan at 7wks4days I think but I had already had a private scan at 6wks to make sure something was there and was in the right place. You can’t see much at 6wks but you can certainly tell if things are heading in the right direction x

They can’t see much to make any good decisions before this point really. At this point they can see how the yolk sac is forming, see the embryo and the heart beat. Before this they’re lucky if they can see anything other than the yolk sac - and you might be lucky within 6 weeks but they also grow at different levels so I’d say stick with the date you have. I also suffered an mc but at 12 weeks so the second scan was more of a concern for me. However I just kept telling myself there’s nothing anyone can actually do if I do MC so what good is it having the scan earlier 😕
