Concerned about losing too much weight too fast

My husband was diagnosed with NAFLD after an ultrasound done due to slightly elevated ALT and AST in May. We started right away on a Mediterranean diet. Husband ate sweets daily and drank 2 liters of mt dew a day prior to this. Hardly ate any veggies, and mostly carbs. We have been pretty strict with diet- no sweets, no soda drinks, chicken and fish only, whole grains, no white anything-flour,rice,potato. No alcohol etc.

In this, Husband has lost 43 pounds in 2 1/2 months! I know that his diet has changed drastically, which would explain the weight loss but I am scared that he is losing too much weight too fast. He is 6'1" tall, and went from a weight of 228 to 185 in such a short time. He doesn't even have to try to lose weight. He eats all he wants of healthy foods. He is very active at work- on his feet all day constantly moving. He does take the dog for a walk about 3 times a week, but that is it for exercise on purpose. lol

Is he losing too much weight? and how do I stop his weight loss so he doesn't lose more without him eating foods he shouldn't? I have asked his GP if he is losing too much weight and he asked if he was having any dizziness, tiredness, upset stomach, and if his appetite is still good. I said the only thing is he complains of is less energy and he feels like he is losing muscle, but I can't seem to get or keep him full he wants to eat all the time. He has a good appetite and He eats very good , just very healthy foods instead of junk food.

Should I be concerned about him losing too much weight? should I find a way to stop his weight loss at some point? His doctor doesn't seem concerned but I wonder sometimes since he isn't making a whole lot of effort to lose weight yet he is, if it might be something bad causing his weight loss.

Normally 2-3 pounds per week is what one should be losing. The fact that he is very active at work and then walks additionally taking the dog out helps him lose weight even more.

So let’s say it’s 11 weeks total at 3 lbs per week, that’s 33 lbs. that is a bit over.

My wife and I also started losing weight at 2-3 lbs a week but finally plateaued after several months and now go up and down a few pounds every week while still eating healthy.

If he is being monitored by his doctor, I would say give him a few months more and see if he stabilizes

He should not go overboard in eating and make sure he is more moderate.

my Dr told me a 2 lb weight loss per week was the goal.

Nutrition is tricky. I would say that you should visit nal.usda.gov/human-nutritio...

And ensure you are both getting adequate nutrition. If you can’t achieve it on your own you may benefit from a consult with a nutritionist. It’s not just calories. You need protein, fats, vitamins A, C etc.

It’s pretty tough to figure stuff out from online descriptions, but it sounds like he has a severe calorie deficit. This is due to what you’re describing in both change in diet and his regular exercise, it’s not unplanned, so it’s likely not something else bad going on. The real question is do you both think this is a lifestyle he can maintain? Some people can, many/most can not. I’ve had to juggle this situation myself. Good luck.

There are 950 calories in each two liter of Mountain Dew. Seven days a week of that is 6,650 calories. Just cutting that out works out to almost two pounds a week at 3,500 calories per pound.

I was concerned about losing too fast also but everyone else didn't seem to. I went to a nutritionist, my cardiologist wanted me to add more protein and didn't want too many carbs. I chose a combination of a diabetic diet and the liver diet off the foundation site. I lost 75 pounds, my skin wasn't very resilient, so I have flab which I hate but the loss did slow. Now I have trouble not letting it go up, he will probably level off too at some point. I don't know your ages but if you are older the skin may sag no matter what you do....weight lifting might help some if you are able.

I've experienced the same with a low carb, low sugar, daily ACV diet. Dropped from 185 to 170 over 9 to 10 months. Feels like I'm losing muscle as well.

When you lose fast you do lose muscle. I lost 49 pounds in 2.5 months and the dr made me stop the diet. I wish I had not because I can't get back on the weight lose journey, however I have lost to much muscle I have trouble walking and I can't carry anything. My back is killing me. So let him have a little of the carbs in moderation, or he will lose his muscles and he can't lose those. I can't walk far, I can't exercise nothing has help. They have sent me to PT many times. So let him have a carb or sweet once in a while and take some Vit B 12 to keep him going. The weight he is at now sounds perfect for a Man.

I lost 10 unexplained pounds & that was how I ultimately was diagnosed with NAFLD. I went to a nutritionist and have almost gained it all back. However I am now eating the right foods, the right amount, in the right combination snd at the right times. I feel great and the NAFLD is essentially gone. It was a lot of work, learning and resilience…… but oh so worth it
