I have been told I had a fatty liver for over 15 years, I have an enlarged liver and the size has went up and down, when I lost weight it was smaller but now that I have gained weight it is enlarged , 22.5 cm. I just had a full liver panel of blood tests and everything was normal but my ALT 34. I am going for a fibrosis liver ultrasound test next week. I googled the ALT of 34, some sites say it is high normal other say otherwise. Just wondering if anyone had input and other than alcohol, what foods should I be eating, and what should I not eat or supplements and vitamins should I be avoiding? I've been trying to be more active and lose weight. I am worried.

ALT of 34

Hi Savanna
Well, generally ALT is not a very good guide except with infections but the fact that your liver is enlarged is something to pay attention to. A diagnosis of fatty liver isn't necessarily dangerous but it can progress to NASH which is inflammatory and causes scar tissue which is a dangerous condition. It takes decade or two to develop for most people so it is important that you get tested and find out what your diagnosis today is. Here is a link to information that we recommend for liver patients but it is good for almost anyone. You should avoid supplements until you know your situation and can get recommendations from your doc.

If you want to be really strict, a plant based diet works best. Next would be a mediterranean diet with mostly vegetables and some fish. Sugar and animal protein are the bad guys. The liver ultrasound is not very exact, but is standard protocol with a fatty liver. Getting worried is normal, but channel that worry into action and manage your condition.
Opinion on eggs? I usually mix an egg with egg whites when I eat them. Which is pretty often.
You just have to pick and choose. The less dairy the better, but you don't have to be strict vegan or paleo. Just try your best to reduce the sugar and animal protein. There is a book by Anthony William titled "Liver Rescue" that is straightforward and helpful. Just remember this is a journey. It took a long time for your liver to get this way, so it's not going to change back overnight. But every choice helps. Get educated, read, and get going. You can do this.
