Update after a year of elevated AST, ALT

Hi! I had covid a year ago in October 2020. Since then my AST and ALT are slightly elevated, around 40-50. They were normal before I contracted covid. I underwent many tests: detailed bloodwork, ultrasounds, fibroscans, no other issues found and no damage to the liver either. The doctors keep saying that they don’t know why the enzymes are elevated and that my liver is ok. I changed my eating habits anyway and I’m eating super healthy for about 9 months. Yet the effect on enzymes is zero. They are still elevated.

Many laboratories consider the numbers you have as being normal numbers.

There is probably no more respected liver facility in the world than the Mayo Clinic. (Of course there are many other great programs, Cleveland Clinic, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, etc.)

They (Mayo) consider 40-50 to be in the normal range (scroll down).

Thanks a lot! It’s great news for me. I studied the link. The european limits are much lower.

And even at the lower levels yours would at worst be considered "very mildly" elevated. You are fine. (But I am not a doctor, so don't take my word for it).

I’m glad for your replay. Thank you! And I think that not being a doctor doesn’t mean one can’t give a valid and useful advise😉

Are you taking any meds that might account for the elevation in liver enzymes? I was using a topical pain reliever called Volaren once and my liver enzymes jumped way up. After stopping it, they came back down.

Thanks for asking and NO, I’m not taking any pills or supplements, never did. In whole my life I didn’t have more than two painkillers and sometimes antibiotics. I seldom used to drink either (about a glass of wine twice a month). Now I don’t drink at all for about nine months. But I’m still looking for areas of improvement so if anything crosses your mind I would love you to share it with me.

Do you have high cholesterol or triglycerides?

No neither. Those values are within brackets too.

It might be the way your body is reacting to the covid. Your enzymes are not that high. In some labs anything under 57 is considered normal for ALT and under 40 for AST you may just be settling on a new normal
