NASH stage 3-4, diabetic and now I have Gastroparesis

On top of everything I now have Gastroparesis and can only have liquids. My liver has been really sore lately and I don’t know if it is worse due to living on protein shakes. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can eat other than protein shakes? I have reached out to two different dietitians but neither one have contacted me to schedule an appointment. Very frustrating because I cannot keep food in my stomach and I enjoy eating and chewing my food.

Thanks

How about chicken broth? It's so nutritious and easy to make.

I have not tried making it but I have used Better Than Bouillon and it was good but very salty to me. I will try to make some this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion.

My doctor called in a script for Reglan to try and decrease the Gastroparesis and I had a reaction to the medication. I have restless leg syndrome and it made me almost crazy it was so bad. I almost went to the ED it was so bad. I am so stiff and sore from my legs jerking so bad. I am not going to take it again due to how I reacted. Now to plan B what ever that is.

I have gastroparesis as well , but can eat mashed potatoes, applesauce, pudding, anything of a soft consistency. Will your doctor let you eat a soft diet ?

He will let me eat anything that I want it’s just that I’m not digesting anything at this point. I went through with drawls about two weeks ago because my extended release tramadol was not getting into my intestines to be broken down and I went through a hell of a three day withdrawal from that. I tried some applesauce and mashed up cottage cheese Last night and this morning it was still undigested.

I feel yr pain Suzie! I have restless legs too. There is nothing worse than when you have meds that ramp up the RLS! Check with Doc for alternative!

If you take reglan make sure you check with other medication because I had 14 major interactions with it and now I have seizures on top of gastroperisis and Nash with cirrhosis and diabetes I have to have full time care because of this medication so beware

I can’t take Reglan. I have restless legs syndrome and one dose took me 4 hrs to control. Never again. I am sorry to hear what the Reglan did with your interactions. I have a lot of severe interactions with my normal medications. It is for Serotonin syndrome but so far with my gut not producing the serotonin the way it should I have been ok. I have come off some of my meds not by choice but because the were enteric coated or extended release and since the could not get into the intestine to break down they just sat in my stomach. I don’t have the name of the medication that I am taking right here but my doctor said it is a cousin to Reglan. Bethanechol is the generic name it has a lot of different brand names depending on the manufacturer. Not sure if it if’s working or not. I am afraid to try much for solids.

Have you found any support groups for Gastroparesis?

They wanted to put me on that drug but because of all my other health issues my pulmonolgist said that was not an option for me so i am doing the erythromycin and it is helping sum what also live on linzess cause i get both constipation and diarrhea with mine. So hard to find doctors and nutritionist that know how to deal with all the restrictions.

I feel for you Suzie. I’m pretty much in the same boat, all but the diabetes (not diabetic anymore). I had a bad bout the last 24 hours it can really test you. It may not sound and really isn’t very appealing but I have found getting what I need is more important than what I want. The bad thing in our cases is that all the foods that one can eat for gastroparesis are pretty much things that lead to diabetes and are diametrically opposed to what I should eat for my NASH induced cirrhosis. It’s a thin line but the right meds and patience do even out MOST of the rough spots. You are in my thoughts. All my best.

P.S. I have found that Michelina pasta sides are almost always tolerable for me. Alfredo, Alfredo with chicken and penne with chicken are always in my freezer. AND 250 calories or less each. On bad days you can have a tolerable (but not balanced) 3 meals for under 900 calories. Hope this helps.

Ask you dr or liver specialist about domperidone (motillium). Not available in the US. My liver specialist writes me a scrip that’s I fill at a Canadian pharmacy. It replaced reglan for me. No rls spikes!

Reglan is something that I can not take in any way shape or form. I have restless leg syndrome and the last time I took reglan I took one pill and with in a short time my restless legs were so bad that I could not walk. I looked like I was having a seizure. It took multiple doses of Benadryl and my medication for restless legs before they calmed down enough so that I could walk to the bedroom. My husband said that I jerked all night long. My GI doc is trying me on Zelnorm which from what my doctor said was taken off the market because of similar side effects as the domperidone. My entire gut is slowed down or stopped on some days adding the zelnorm means that I am on 3 medication for constipation, and still I struggle. My GI specialist out of University of Colorado says to watch the Zelnorm because of my liver. It gets so frustrating at time I just want to throw up my hand and quit it all. With everything I am dealing with I take about 13 different medications for different things. Plus I had a J tube placed last October so that I could deliver my medications and get nutrition through it. But crushing the pills get old. I have found a shake that I can tolerate with my stomach. If you want to check it out go to dllgreen.org. I do a shake with the reds and greens plus I am taking a digestive enzyme and probotics along with it. I think it is helping. One of the studies I had done was very thin barium and it was able to pass through the pyloric valve very slowly but it was able to pass. So as long as what I drink is thin it seems to go through okay. I have 2 to 3 shakes a day that I grind up with a lot of ice in my food processor. Then I can almost eat it like ice cream. I think that is what gets me is that I enjoy food and now I can't do it. There are time I crave a salad, but I don't dare.

I have rambled on long enough. Thanks for listening.
