NASH with Stage 4 Cirrhosis
Hi Bird
Your doc will have to address the cholesterol but diet and lifestyle are your other weapons. Here is a link to information on our website although some browsers and blocking links lately so you might have to go to our website and look under Nutrition

I was in stage 4 in Dec. 2018. I have lost 48 pounds and they say I'm in a 3 now. I'm also on the research pill for a cure, so that might of helped too. It's so hard to lose weight. I find fresh vegs are better than all the preservatives so I'm so happy summer is on it's way. I don't get a lot of exercise, but lots of rest helps the liver. Get the stress out of your life which is hard too. I was diagnosed 20 years ago. Still going.
I was diagnosed with stage 4 Liver disease or Cirrhosis six years ago and was told I needed a liver transplant which I could not get because at the same time I was diagnosed with Stage 4 liver cancer. I had to have a TIPS Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt placed in order to have the surgery required after the chemotherapy and radiation for the cancer. I had the TIPS for one year and was to retain it until I was allowed a liver transplant after 5 years free of Cancer. After one year with TIPS, I insisted my Doctor remove the shunt in my liver because a TIPS does not allow the liver to detoxify the blood to keep the liver at rest. This means all the blood that enters your brain is now not detoxified. This led to unbearable mental problems. He put me on a low-carb diet of fewer than 30 grams of carbs per day, less than 2000 mg of salt, and no sugar, but lots of protein. After three months, all of my liver tests except platelets were normal. At my next visit, he told me I no longer needed a liver transplant.
This is your answer. Talk to your doctor and you may contact me for whatever info he needs if he is doubtful about this treatment. I am living proof that it works. You will need to eat this way the rest of your life but if it means living a lot longer and not needing a transplant, I say go for it. You owe it to your kids and wife if nothing else. Good Luck! What you put in your body matters.
I just got diagnosed with cirrhosis last week. I do not drink. I am kinda freaking out. I will be 64 in Aug. I have an autistic son who is 32. I pray I can reverse this. I am seeing a specialist on July 15th for the first time. I only found out when I had covid and they checked my lungs with cat scan.
Read every label on the food you are considering eating and keep track of your carb count everyday. Until your test results show your cirrhosis is under control, stay under 30 carbs per day. Then no more than 50 carbs. Eat no sugar. Salt intake below 2000 mg or 2 grams. My guess is you have diabetes also. This regimen will control that problem too. Non-Alcoholic-Steato-Hepatitis is generally caused by the American diet of high carbs and sugar, as is Diabetes, which is generally the precursor to this type of Liver problem.
BirdNash. Diet and Exercise. I was diagnosed with Nash in 2020 and these are the powerful weapons at your fingertips, but it is tough. Stick with it and eventually you will adjust slowly to this new way of eating. Initially, I cried days because I was still hungry, but I persevered and I am winning with these tools. You can do it, stay present everyday.
