Sorry I don’t know about taking lactose. But when I was in hospital I to had memory loss. Couldn’t remember my name, date of birth or family names. I had to have therapy to regain memory. Stay in touch with your doctor. And good luck !

I couldn't handle lactulose either. My doctor put me on Xifaxan and it helps with getting rid of toxins and your not constantly going to the bathroom. It is very expensive but your doctor might be able to assist you like mine did. Good luck

I tried one dose of Lactulose and spent two days running to the bathroom. I do have memory loss - have most older memories intact, but current memory is spotty. Not worth the cost (to my behind or to me personally) to be tied to the house 24/7. There's got to be another solution to remove amonia and clear the brain fog without that Lactulose.

my Mom was past just memory loss or mental fog, she couldn't take the Lactulose, so her doctor was able to get her on Xifaxan (like $1000 dollars a month or more) which wasn't covered on her insurance. She had it for free the last year of her life. She had been hallucinating and couldn't function normally. Within two weeks of taking the new drug she was her normal self (mentally). She called it her miracle drug. :) I thank the makers of Xifaxan that they had given this to her, because it gave us another 9 months with her in a healthy mental state.

Hi

My roommate has liver disease and was prescribed lactulose. And then the uncontrollable pooping began, and he refused to take it any more, so the ammonia built up in his brain. You know how it goes!

Long story short: his daily dose is 3x22.5ml of lactulose. Instead of taking it 3x a day, he tried spreading it through the day, with a small sip (about 1/4 of a shot glass) every hour. Result? His ammonia is stable, and he's having his required three BMs a day. I also went with him to his liver specialist appointment recently; the specialist was happy with the lactulose little-and-often dosing.

I'd say it's worth a try but check it with your specialist first. I'm happy with it because roommate is happier, healthier, his memory and thinking are clearer, and because I do ALL the laundry my life is a little easier and a lot less poopy!

Good luck with it

Thank you! think am new here and am looking for posts about living with cirrhosis. I'm going to try the smaller doses of Lactulose more often. I simply cannot afford Xifaxin, so other than never leaving the house again this sounds like a much better choice. I've had waaayyy too many close calls in the supermarket, etc. I've always been able to make it to the ladies in the nick of time, but it's scary. On the upside, I now have another use for my shot glasses! No more liquor, just Lactulose 😉

I really hope it works out for you! But - like I said - please mention it to your specialist; it works for room mate, and if it works for you maybe we can get the specialists to spread the word. And, yep, Xifaxan is stoopid-expensive ($1375/month or more, through insurance).
