Coffee Anyone?

Hi Eveyone-

I’ve read a lot of literature about the benefits of coffee to the liver. What I am wondering though is if anyone has thoughts or experiences with Coffee enemas? I have read that coffee enemas, when done properly, stimulate the liver to produce bile and act as sort of a liver scrubber/detoxifier.

Thoughts anyone?

I don't have an opinion on that. There are people who believe, but I don't know of any studies. What we do know, and the reason coffee is recommended, is that it lowers the risk of developing liver cancer. There are some claims about antioxidants and such but it is harder to test that idea.

It can be dangerous too, I think.

I’ve never heard of coffee enamas being helpful. Although my doctor suggested I drink coffee to help repair my liver. Also I’ve been told that Milk Thistle is an healing vitamin for the liver. Good luck!

Yes I’ve been told the same. That black coffee is beneficial to the liver. Lucky for me because I love coffee. Seems like I’ve given up everything else but got to keep coffee.

Thanks for the reply.

Chellie,

I have heard in various forums or publications coffee is very helpful for people with a damaged liver. But one has to be careful and not add sugar to the cup! As far as the coffee enema I wouldn’t do it without asking my doctor about it but that is just me. On another note I keep hearing from people who feel strongly about Milk Thistle helping or healing the liver. Do you use it? I recently heard an on line lecture and the Gastro doc said it’s fine if you like wasting your money because there is no data to support ANY benefit from Milk Thistle. Your thoughts? Anyone?

Hi Harrison-

I was diagnosed with fatty liver four years ago and I have given up sugar which meant drinking my coffee black....yikes!! It was a tough change but it happened and I actually do enjoy it that way now. As for Milk Thislte it’s the same it seems for everyone...my Gasto and Hepatologist said no benefit but Homeopathic Dr’s disagree. In my four years of dealing with my fatty liver I’ve found that diet, exercise and getting adequate sleep at night have been most helpful to me. I do however take Tumeric, liquid multi B and a sublingual Vitamin D. The reason for the liquid B is that I am vegan and have been deficient in B12 and have also show deficient in Vit D as well. I juice everyday. I don’t eat meat, dairy, bread or sugar. I load up on all I can get of veggies, moderation on fruits, tofu, hummus, multi grain rice cakes, oatmeal with almond milk....for a few examples. I do once in awhile have a cheat day but they really are rare now. I feel like I’ve come so far I don’t want to slip back.

My next appt with my Hepatologist is August for a Fibroscan. My last scan in December showed stage 2 fatty liver with a 255 CAP score. So I’m hoping that I get a good reading on fibrosis score and fat score. My bloodwork has been really good over the past year.

Sounds like you are really on top of things! That’s great. I don’t know if I could do vegan but I am getting closer to being a vegetarian. Really curious. Can you give my an idea of what a vegan eats? Morning meal? Lunch? Dinner? Also some snack ideas, low sugar??

Thank you,

Harrison

. 30 ounces of fresh juice in the morning that I make. It contains: 1 apple, 4 celery stalks, 2 cups of spinach, 1/2 lemon and 2 carrots

I must say it surprises me that with the above ingredients you can produce 30 Oz. Juice. Maybe you add water in that mix?

Yes I get one cannot be 100% perfect with their daily diet but you do seem to eat a bunch of healthy stuff. Giving ourselves a small treat once in awhile is better than binge eating because we deprived themselves.

I like the idea of rice cakes with hummus and avocado but the white rice is not good for liver health. Wondering, have you eaten vegan cheese before? I like cheese but the fat and salt in most all cheese is not good.
