Fasting and dementia risk

Hi all :)

After a few months of being a bit indifferent/cautious to me fasting, Mr Stoozie has decided to give it a go.

His reasoning is to avoid dementia risk. He is also coeliac. His BMI is normal, so I don't think he'd want to lose too much weight.

I wondered if anyone has read any good scientific studies on the specific length and types of fasting useful for brain health?

S11m would Dr Mindy be the right place to start?

Many thanks all.

Hi, Stoozie

I am not a qualified medic, and most of the videos cover many aspects of fasting. I could not find many good videos that were mostly about the benefits of (Intermittent) Fasting for dementia. Longer fasts (IF 20:4 and longer) are good for Autophagy and dementia - but tend to cause weight loss.

Nearly all the links are about Intermittent Fasting rather that Longer fasts. He will deed to Transition into "fat-burning mode" before he tries longer Intermittent fast - let alone longer fasts.

Ketosis is good for dementia. The keto diet is expensive and complicated but can give you ketosis without weight loss.

Here is a video bu Dr Mindy Pelz:

I have looked through my list of videos - and some of these might be relevant - but tend to be more about longevity than dementia:

youtu.be/njM2swbICYg?list=WL

I have not watched these videos, but they might be of interest:

A YouTube search for "fasting dementia" turned up:

youtube.com/watch?v=kifSjSA...

youtube.com/watch?v=KGFUPSd...

youtube.com/watch?v=NlbdMb8...

A Google search produced this:

Perhaps you could tell me which you thought was most helpful?

Thank you S11m

Mr Stoozie has a PhD and is a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry, so I think Dr Fung and Dr Pelz's approaches are most likely to appeal to him as they seem to like to give their audiences an evidence-based approach.

Once I have watched them all I can write a precis if you like?

Thank you - I look forward to your feedback.

I have vascular cognitive impairment - and I think Intermittent fasting has helped - but I think my new pacemaker gave most of the improvement.

precis #2 ThomasDeLauer

I really liked this one. He presented his data and views clearly and with references in the notes 5 of which were to scientific research.

I confess to having thought he was just a personal trainer, but clearly he has both brains and brawn :)

Precis #1 Dr Mindy.

Good points: She is watchable, engaging and knowledgeable

Less Good points: She is mostly answering questions from her community members as follows:

Does fasting help with anxiety?

Fasting and alcoholism

Does ACV break a fast?

Do I have to track carbs?

Is it possible to get stuck even with a healthy lifestyle?

Does Restore/ION break a fast?

Irregular heartbeat and fasting

Berberine for balancing blood sugar

Why break a fast with fat

Can fasting help my condition?

Can teenagers fast?

What about 21 day fasts?

Ramadan Fasting

Which as you can see has little to do with dementia.

However she does cite an interesting research paper in the notes afterwards, which WAS useful: youtube.com/redirect?v=MjbB...

Hi, Thanks - Dr Mindy does go on a bit "very emphatic".

I could not get the link you gave me to work - but I used the link Dr Mindy gave:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

and it works for me.

The questions I ask myself are:

Does IF prevent or cure dementia?

Are longer fasts better?

Do IF or longer fast work better if combined with LCHF or keto?

Do carbs/hyperinsulinaemia cause dementia?

The details of how BDNF rebuilds connections in the brain are academic - I do not feel any obligation to study the details of how it works.

Not what you're looking for?
