Bedwetting help

Both my 7 & 5 year old sons have never been dry at night, my eldest has had periods of being in and out of pull ups. He’s now adamant he doesn’t want pull ups but more times than none he has an accident. Majority of the time it’s early morning, he is a very deep sleeper. Both hubby and I were bed wetters, hubby till he was similar age of not older so genetics are against my son! We’ve tried incentivising, bought an alarm (he slept through.) I know I should keep my cool but it’s so frustrating :-S I’m at my wits end. Eldest has seen enuresis clinic and nothing clinically wrong.

he is still only young, essentially you are waiting for the hormone vasopressin being produced and that's something you can't control. There are things that you can do to help though, ensure that he drinks plenty of water during the day, this will help to train the bladder to hold more liquid, do not lift to take to the toilet at night as it only manages the issue and not deal with it, but do take him to the toilet before bed twice and make sure he completely empties his bladder, count to 30, you will be surprised how much wee comes out again. Don't restrict liquids after a certain time, it doesn't actually work . Have a read of this article bbuk.org.uk/wp-content/uplo... . Bedwetting is extremely common, i think in a class of 30 children (primary age) 1in 3 will still be wetting at night.

Hi, how long have you tried the alarm for? We had success with an alarm but it took about4 months. For the first two weeks at least my daughter slept through. I’d gently wake her and eventually she started to wake. I think first time she woke up before wee was about 1.5 months later!!

Ahh, we probably didn’t persevere long enough then...just felt silly when he slept through and was soaking wet

My daughter was dead to the world for first few weeks even when I put the alarm next to her ear!!! I gently woke her at the start. But somehow it started to work. Eventually waking but wet, and moved to waking and dry. A long road with a few regresses back to being wet again but she got there in the end. Definitely wasn’t a 7 day success for us. Took a few months before I even dared try without a nappy!! We are 8 months later now and she has been dry for about 6 weeks nonstop now. I’m starting to think we might have cracked it 🤞. Maybe try again when you both feel ready.
