My 10yr old boy still has nights of bedwetting(not every night) and tends to be just before waking up, so early morning.

We tried Desmopressin but didn't seem to make a difference. He has a school trip in September and we woukd really like to try and get on top of this before the.

Any advice greatly appreciated x

What dose of Desmopressin is he on? Have you ruled out constipation? How much does he drink during the day, this is key to strengthening and stretching the bladder to hold more urine at night.

Two tablets. He seems to be regular, so doesn't appear to be constipated. He had a bladder scan years ago which showed it was on the small side..

This will be an unpopular opinion but you might want to encourage him to wear some sort of protection when he does go away on his trip, the school should be able to accommodate helping him into a a nappy or pull up discreetly.

I can still remember getting a phone call at 1am from my son's scout master to come and collect his as he wanted to go home, he had wet himself on the top bunk, and was very upset about it.

He was 8 at the time and had been reliably dry at night since he turned 6.

I turned out they gave the boys tea with there supper, and that's why I think he was wet.

He never wanted to go back to the scouts again.

Oh what a shame! How are things going now?

Ok I guess, that was 20 years ago, he's a grown man now.

Was the only time he ever wet the bed, his dad was a bedwetter until his early 20s, so we where expecting him to take a long time to get dry at night, but it only took a year from when he was potty trained during the day, for him to be mostly dry at night.

Hi djc. That's interesting. When you say he wets just before waking up in the morning, do you mean literally he is scheduled to rise at 7am for example and he wets just before or perhaps in the hour prior? Or could he have wet much earlier in the night but wake to the discomfort as he is naturally heading towards morning rousing?

Do you know what time he wets? Are you using a bedwetting alarm?

If he is truly wetting in that period just before full wakefullness then Desmopressin would be wearing off by then; it would have done it's job all night. It could be he is waking enough to 'flick the switch' for vasopressin night time don't pee response to turn off, but not enough to actually respond to that wake up call by getting up and peeing. Does he understand the night hormonal response and that if you wake up you must get up to pee not just go back to sleep.? I had to really spell it out to my son......for years! The penny dropped eventually that I wasn't spinning him some weird parental line.

Hi halftime, no not using an alarm he never liked them. Yes, just before waking usually so can go thru the night but sometimes wets early hours 6-7am , hes such a deep sleeper. Its almost as if he can nearly sleep over 8hrs but isdue if any longer.

Have you thought about using one of those phone apps which monitor your sleep?. My older daughter used one to give a 'control' version of her sleep pattern and then my bedwetting son used one for a couple of weeks. It wasn't perfect because she had an iphone and he doesn't but it was illuminating. My son was comatose within 4 mins and had much longer (much longer!) stretches of very deep sleep. I could also pinpoint time he wet on the iphone version we tried on my daughters phone. They are free downloads.

Thanks halftime, are the downloads a sleep tracker app? Thanks

My son's was called Sleep Monitor and the iphone one was called Prime Sleep Recorder my daughter tells me. But there are lots of them- don't pay, lots are free. Our selection process was pretty much random! It's interesting to get a peek at what's going on at night.
