First time using sodium picosulfate? We use senna too for 10 year old with hypermobility with constant uncontrolled soiling likely impacted

Hi I will write a longer post about my daughters problems ,,, But I have a quick question to start with ..... is Dulcolax (sodium picosulfate) a stool softener (in that it adds liquid to the poo to make it softer ?) I was lead to believe it was ... but on reading up it seems to be classed as a stimulant...... my daughter already takes senna (which is a stimulant- not a softener). The reason I ask is because my daughter is currently impacted & soiling a lot ..... I was presuming we’d be given movicol to clear the blockage,... but the doctor has prescribed this .... but when I quizzed about whether this would lead to the watery passing to you know the Clearout was done ... she didn’t seem to know, and if it’s not the case it makes it watery how will I know it’s completely cleared it? More importantly I want to know if this is a softener as well as a stimulant? As if not she’ll be 2 stimulants ! Quick back note she’s nearly 11years old with Hypermobility as well as many other problems.... & I fear everything is completely overstretched & has no muscle tone to effectively push things through.

Thanks any help much appreciated

You’re right, you need a softener alongside the stimulant. Otherwise the tummy ache will be dreadful.

I think it’s about time doctors started reading this forum 🙄

Yes as the others have said it is a Stimulant. My 8 year old son has been taking it for quite a while now. He is on 20ml a day and I have do Micro Enemas twice a week too. He is still soiling but he’s just had another transit study done and we are slowly getting there. He has dyspraxia and has poor muscle tone. He was taking Movicol for a long time including trying several times going up to 12 sachets to disimpact but it didn’t work hence the enemas and Pico Sulphate. He used to take Senna and it was quite good but Pico Sulphate is more effective so I’d defiantly be inclined to try it instead of the Senna. My sons stools are really loose on the Pico Sulphate but his Consultant has told me to keep going as he has what’s called a mega Rectum and because he’s been so blocked up she says it is very big and floppy and will take time to become toned again once his bowel is more clear.
