Hi, we’re on day 6 of disimpaction using movicol and my 10 year old son has been screaming crying in pain for weeks including during disimpaction (we only found out it was fecal impaction a couple of weeks ago). We’ve had some type 6/7 poo with hard bits but not a lot. I’ve given him calpol. Is this much pain normal for fecal impaction? What else can we do? It’s heartbreaking!

pain during disimpaction

So sorry to hear about this. We have been there too - my daughter was the same in terms of pain, it has been awful. When they did an X ray, they found that high doses of Movicol were also causing her a lot of gas in her stomach which was adding to the pain. Calpol really doesn't help a lot - we were told we could combine calpol with ibuprofen. We used hot water bottles and gave baths and used distractions. Are you giving him lots of liquids? we were consistently told 1.5 litres per day. Plus, if he has periods where he feels okay, then exercise is really good for getting things moving. Sending you my support. In the end for us, we had to resort to enemas which was awful but it slowly cleared the blockage and we are slowly getting back to normal though she still has pain sometimes. It has been a long journey for us but hopefully not so long for you!
aww sorry to hear about your daughter going through all this pain. It’s so hard isn’t it. When did they have to introduce an enema was it after two weeks of movicol not working or much later? Just wondering when this is option for us with the GP. Are they done at home or the hospital. Thanks 🙏
