Bedwetting

My wee boy age 8 still continues to bedwet. I think he is so sound asleep he is only aware once he has done the toilet then he wakes and will change into a dry pull up. This happens every night and not always waking but always wakes up wet in the morning. Tried not to give drinks after dinner time, and lifting to go to the toilet but as you can imagine it's hard to lift an 8 year old and he would still be wet in the morning. He has hypermobility so unsure if this does not help or intefers with his toileting. He has had a scan on his kidney relating to his hearing loss and scan came back normal. Unsure what to do next but he is becoming more embarrassed and loves to go for a sleepovers with cousin s and in couple of years would have the opportunity to go for a week away with the school but wouldnt be able to. Go if still in pull ups. We need this sorted out but don't know what step to take next.

Hi I posted for the first time the other day. My 9 year old son is also hypermobile! He has never been dry at night and has an overactive bladder! It is definitely linked (I also have bladder problems). He has now had a colon transit test and the transit is too slow (also I believe linked to hypermobility). He is most likely impacted and only passing overflow poo. Most likely his bowel is over stretched and squashing his bladder. Therefore he can’t hold much urine. Has your son got any issues with his bowels? X

Thank you for getting back to me xx he hasn't really any issues with his bowels. But he does get desperate for the toilet and it comes on him really quickly. He could drink a bottle of water in and hour and half and run to the toilet 5 times afterwards the school write to say he keeps asking out and I've explained if they have water on the table. He will drink it and need to use the toilet alot they said I've to encourage him to take little sips. I don't know if my next step should be going to. The doctors to ask again what to do as they said previously he would grow out it but that was a year and a half ago so they might have other suggestions now I'm not sure x

I had no idea that my son had bowel issues and I’m a nurse! He had been opening his bowels regularly but must have been leaving lots of poo behind as well. Originally we went to an enuresis (bed wetting) nurse run clinic. He was put on desmopressin which fakes the hormone that is meant to dry you up at night and completely dries up some kids. That made no difference. We used a bed wetting alarm for months. That didn’t work and it would go off so frequently that it became obvious that he can’t hold much in his bladder. He was also put on oxybutynin and he still takes that. That relaxes his bladder a little and has helped a little with the urgency in the day. In the end I realised his hypermobility was probably the cause. So I asked for a referral to a rheumatologist to get a hypermobility diagnosis and then asked the rheumatologist to refer to either a urologist who understands hypermobility or a paediatrician. We ended up with a paediatrician who seems to understand hypermobility. I am really hoping that sorting out his bowels will get him dry. Though apparently it can take the bowel a while to shrink back. I would say definitely ask for a referral! It’s heart breaking isn’t it? My son goes on a residential trip with school next year and I can’t bear the thought of him being teased for wearing nappy pants. There is a hypermobility association that have some literature and a helpline I believe xx

I forgot to say that he has been on laxatives for 3 weeks but hasn’t opened his bowels much. So I am going to keep him home next week and do the disimpaction they recommend on the ERIC website. At least if he’s home with me, I won’t have to worry about him having tummy cramps or having an accident at school! Xx

I have telephoned the incontinence nurses so just waiting for them to call back, I wouldn't want to try the medication but would like to try the alarm to see if it worked. I hope you get somewhere and it helps with bowel shrinking keep in touch and let me know how he gets on. Hope he manages to get on his wee trip.
