My son is 7 and going through dis-empaction, we are on week 3 of 8-12 sachets of movicol a day but it doesn't seem to be making any difference tbh. He is off school and i am refusing to send him until its complete as over the last 3 years there have been consistent accidents which never seem to be noticed. i was wondering whats the longest it has taken some other families and how have you coped? i obviously can't work due to this and its all taking its toll. Thanks in advance

how long for disempaction with movicol?
Hi my daughter has alot of impaction up to 8 a day depending on age she 3 and half.up til 4 th day to clear him out it take a good two weeks then reduce back down she on 4 a day aswell as senna at night.it feels like a never ending battle.ive seen a difference when she don't have alot of milk. Feel your pain.its awful.x
Hi but don't never stop movelcoil I made that mistake. My peadrictians have said it can take a good 6 years for the brain to train the bowels. Great.x
I would get a doctors apptmt and discuss what you have tried and see what they suggest. They might prescribe a stimulant medication to go alongside the movicol. Also might be worth trying suppositories as well. My son is on movicol, Senna and bisocodyl suppositories (still constipated) but his problem is very severe and he’s waiting for trans anal irrigation.
When you say it doesn't seem to be making any difference would you mind describing what's happening? We were in a similar position with my son and I thought he still wasn't clear after a month, but he had an x-ray at that point and it confirmed that he actually was. I'd say definitely book a doctor's appointment and ask them for advice. I think the NICE guidelines recommend introducing a stimulant laxative after a week if disimpaction hasn't been achieved by then, so perhaps they will be able to prescribe some Senna if you still haven't had any joy.
Also up his fluids .if still not working go back to your gp.x
