4 year old reduced laxative back to square one ( really long post sorry I need help)

Hey guys new here and thank god I found you all I finally don’t feel alone! I literally have struggled to find anyone to talk or who can relate as none of my friends children have this! It started way before we started potty training but only really noticed that it was a big problem when we started but he was so constipated he would soil himself all day everyday. there was never a time he didn’t have poo in his pants. He was referred to the hospital who started a de compacting treatment and it has been amazing a huge difference but not perfect! He goes every other day but there huge and you feel like you can’t do anything until he goes as when he needs to go you need to get him on the toilet ASAP so not ideal however he stopped soiling himself so much better! He had a hospital appointment last Monday and they reduced his medication to half but everyday and a sachet of movicol everyday so still quiet a bit of laxtative and we are back to square one I’m finding him running of to other rooms crossing his legs stopping the poo from coming out (what he used to do allllll the time) poo in his pants again he hasn’t been for 7 days. I’ve upped his medicine so he will have to go weather he likes it or not but I’m just so worried this is never going to get better?? Is he going to have to rush to the toilet for huge poos for the rest of his life? Or have accidents, and the poo becomes so soft it goes everywhere! He starts school next September and I’m so worried for him!

Hi there, I Know it's so nice to speak to people who really understand!! Have you watched the poo nurses video,that's very helpful. It's sounds as if the dosage is the problem which is very difficult to get right. Does he take senokot as well? We found that very helpful ,gives them the feeling of needing to go.Good luck I'm afraid we haven't found an easy quick fix but things have got better over the last six years, our daughter is nine now!!

Thank you so reassuring to hear good news from others! I to think it’s the dosage just need to get it right I guess he’s on picosulphate as well which stimulates the Bowles

Hi there! I’ve just recently found this forum too and found it to be so helpful. We are just at the beginning of getting my daughters constipation sorted so I’m no expert but maybe you need to play around with the Movicol dose a bit? I think the ideal situation is that your lb would do quite a soft poo every day. So maybe the dose needs adjusting so it’s not a massive poo every other day but a bit more solid than when he’s having to rush to the toilet because it’s too loose. Does that make sense? I think it’s a good idea to reduce/increase dose gradually by a small amount (we’ve been recommended to adjust by half a sachet and keep my daughter on that for a few days to see how she gets on before changing again). Have you spoken to the people at ERIC? They have been so helpful & have a phone line you can ring and they will be able to advise you properly. Hope this makes sense as typing quickly! As I said I’m no expert but phone ERIC

So we went to the doctors yesterday he finally went to the toilet after 7 days at the doctors while we where waiting what are the chances lol! Anyway he said to keep him on the picosulphate that seems to work really well for him just to empty him out again then slowly reduce that and add a sachet if movicol when we reduce it theory it should work so we shall see! I never knew constipation could be so stressful I really feel for any parent having to deal with this

Getting the dosage right is the key. My daughter is on 4 Movicol a day and she's now going everyday but always mushy.. pedatrician said better to overdose and have softer more manageable poos than the other end of the scale. For me I just think at least it's coming out and therefore she won't get impacted again. Good community on here. Lots of help and advice. I thought I was alone until I found this forum xxx
