Seizure symptoms

Hi all

I have recently been seizure free for around 6 weeks, however this weekend during my sleep i have been getting what feels like a build up to a seizure, my leg starts twitching uncontrollably for around 30 seconds then just stops and i'm fine. This normally happens in my sleep, but has happened this weekend during the day aswell. I seemed to be fine the whole of Sunday and Sunday night. Does anyone else experience this sensation?

My friend who has epilepsy takes magnesium for muscle spasm and thinks it prevents seizure onset

Hi Anthony

Thank you for your message.

Some people with epilepsy have a feeling or symptoms they get that warns them they’re about to have a tonic-clonic seizure, sometimes called an "aura." The aura is in fact the seizure starting in one side of the brain as a focal aware seizure. The seizure then spreads to affect both sides of the brain.

Focal aware seizures can also happen on their own, without developing into another seizure type. Some people who have focal aware seizures on their own also call them auras.

We have more information on focal seizures here: epilepsy.org.uk/info/seizures/focal-seizures

If this is not something you've experienced before, it may be a good idea to speak to your epilepsy specialist, epilepsy nurse (if you have one) or your GP about it.

I hope you hear from others on this platform, as sharing information and experiences can be a good idea. Can I just check you also know about our other services?

We have our virtual support groups epilepsy.org.uk/virtual-groups. We have our forum4e online community forum.epilepsy.org.uk/, and we are on facebook facebook.com/epilepsyaction and twitter twitter.com/epilepsyaction.

Finally, please feel free to contact our helpline team. You can either email helpline@epilepsy.org.uk or phone the Epilepsy Action Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050. Our helpline is open Monday to Tuesday 8.30am until 700pm, Wednesday to Friday 8.30am until 4.30pm and Saturday 10.00am until 4.00pm.

Regards

Jess
