Driving after a seizure.

I am a 72 year old male with Parkinson's and I had my first and only seizure on Christmas day. I was in a highly stressed state and had gone without sleep for 48 hours while nursing my wife who was who extremely ill and dying of esophageal cancer.

My driving license hasn't been revoked and I haven't been asked to surrender it. However I have not driven since and as I live on my own in an isolated countryside location with no public transport, I was wondering how long I should wait before I drive again. I would appreciate any comments.

Thank you,

Daveyjay

Ask your GP, hopefully will be able to pass you onto a neurolgist or specialist in epilepsy. It might just be a one off seizure? Good Luck!

Hi Davejay

Thank you for your question.

It’s good that you have stopped driving but the driving laws state you must update the DVLA if you develop a ‘notifiable’ medical condition or disability.

Notifiable conditions are anything that could affect your ability to drive safely. This includes an isolated seizure and epilepsy.

When you can apply for your licence back will be up to the DVLA. If the DVLA class your seizure as an isolated seizure you should be able to apply for your licence back after 6 months.

We have heard from others in a similar situation as yourself, who stopped driving but didn’t realise they had to return their licence to the DVLA. On a positive note, we have not heard of anyone being prosecuted when they have up dated the DVLA. But we do know if you don’t tell the DVLA they could fine you up to £1,000 if they become aware of your situation. You may also be prosecuted if you’re involved in an accident as a result of the condition.

You will need to complete the declaration of voluntary surrender form. Return this with your licence. It’s a good idea to either take a photocopy of your driving licence, or to make a note of your driving licence number before sending it.

If you wish to discuss this further, please contact the Epilepsy Action Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050. Our helpline is open Monday to Friday, 8.30am until 5.30pm.

Diane
