Hi Ladies, I'm due for laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomy on monday. I recieved my admission letter and it appears it is day surgery. I'm not sure if i am happy with having this procedure and coming out the same day. has anyone had one before and what is the recovery and hospital day like. thanks in advance xx

Hey hun,

I know how you feel, Im waiting to have a hysterectomy just my womb, and I have been told it will be a day case, as they plan on removing it vaginally, as the recovery time is quicker than having to remove it by cutting my abdomen. I have noticed over the years the time spent in hospital is less and I recently had a day surgery in April for various stuff, removal of endo and bio's and removal of lining of my womb, and an m.o.t as my consultant put it.

I would ring the number on the letter and ask if this is correct, also if you have the number of your consultant, this is normally his secretary and he may be able to ring you back about your concerns.

If your on a ward, you will go in at the time it is stated on the letter, be shown to your bed and then basically wait for your turn. Your wait will all depend where you are on the list for surgery that day im sorry to stay so take a book or magazine with you xxx

i think its disgusting the lack of after care patients receive now, for anything in hospital - when my mum had her hysterectomy, and ok i'm going back late 70's but she was in hospital for 2 weeks - she always says how different things were giving birth was 10-14 days in hospital, with the babies looked after during the night - i know times have changed and we wouldn't want to be in hospital so long but blimey daycase for a hysterectomy - my sisters hysterectomy was done vaginally, she was in for four days, whichever way it is done it is still a very serious operation, and it should not be dismissed as a day case, although initial recovery is 6-12 weeks, full recovery is actually 12 months before full heavy lifting can be done as there is much healing internally to be done, otherwise you risk prolapse of other things xxx

i was thinking it should be a few days more especially as i am allergic to all opiate medication so will only be on paracetomol and ibuprofen. hopefully the hospital will do the right thing and keep me in for at least the night.

thanks for help xx

worth71 is right, it is a disgusting you could almost compare it to a "meat market". But I understand your concerns as Im a single mum of 2 boys aged 7 and 3 which is why they are doing mine vaginally, maybe that is why your is laproscopically as there is faster healing on the outside anyway but as mentioned by worth71 internally it takes a lot longer. Speak to your local council as if you have children in primary school you could qualify for free transport to take your kids to and from school giving the type of op. This can be done also when you go into hospital along with seeing if you can get any home help? I was advised by local council to mention it to the nurse the day of my op and I will be assessed that day and the apropriate help maybe given. It is worth a try hun as my nanna used to say "if you dont ask, you never know".

Also take your book, I was in my baggies with heavy metal playing on my ipod and reading a tattoo magazine lol xxx

haha thanks hun. it will be nice to have some peace and quiet to read it. i know i cannot be left alone for 24 hours after anaesthetic so if i come home the same day i will be on my own. if i tell nurses im unattended they will make me stay. good job my puppy is tiny. hes not gonna hurt me. i just want it over with to be honest to get rid of the pain. im only 29 so i am being told its serious if deciding to do hysterectomy.

heres to pain free years xxx

Your the same age as me hun. Ive had this out with my consultant he did the "what if you meet mr right and he wants kids" my answer " tuff" his reply " but what if he begs you and begs you" my answer " then he isnt mr right then is he". I got sterilized when I was 26 and I only have my right fallopien tube. I really dont want anymore kids and they have had 11yrs to try and sort it out, Im tired and at the end of my patience with it all. Yes it is serious hun, but you still have the final say. If like me you dont want anymore kids and your womb is just a piece of rotting meat ( sorry I have a "special" way of saying things lol) then you need to think about what is going to be best and ask if all other options have been exhausted.

oooh sorry off topic there is an awesome thunder storm coming as Im typing this :-D

I was very naughty in April my ex had our boys and my dad picked me up and brought me home... I was alone the whole night.... Not advisable and shouldnt have been done tut tut tut, but sometimes what can you do ;-) Get friends to text or call you every so often or if someone drives to check on you if they can hun xxx

i definitely do not want any more kids. i have a little bo and a little girl so my family is complete. i am currently at uni so i am just starting out on my career so babies are last thing on my mind. and i find it so traumatic when my 4 yr old boy brings me hot water bottles and teddy bears without bein asked cos he can see how much pain i am in. its not fair on them. id rather be healthy for the babies i have got rather can grieve over something i never want again. i sound so harsh. ive never had any other treatments and have not been diagnosed with a laparascopy. my doc felt my ovaries and said definitely endo. my biggest problem is the bowel issues i have with it. so looking forward to eating without looking 7 months pregnant after.

when is your surgery xx

You dont sound harsh at all..... oh you have swelly belly as well. My endo is around my bowels my last op April they put a solution around it to stop them from sticking together, was not pleasant felling the sloshing I can tell ya ha ha ha ha ha and removed what they could, so fingers crossed that will prevent it from doing anymore damage for a while.

I should be getting my appointment through to see my consultant anytime soon as this is the 3rd month of the combo tablets that they wanted me to try before going for the hysterectomy. I hoping to get it done in about 3mths as he said he wouldnt prolong it any further if they dont work, me bwing me correct him and said when it doesnt work. I have been on them tablets before and they didnt help with the heavy periods which is one of the main problems I have. Like you hun it is upsetting when your child comes to your aid, my 7yr old sits with me on the floor until the episode subsides, and makes sandwiches and he now makes breakfast every morning now, only cereal or yog and fruit. He has had to grow up so fast the last 3yrs and want him to enjoy his child hood and not panic everytime when I get bad that im going to be rushed into hospital again.

I had to go to my gp today and asked to go on prostap again so he rang my consultant but got a call back later today and my consultant said no and to continue with the tablets, which i am very annoyed with. My body needs a break and my kids need there mother back... But hey ho whats another 3-6mths after being like this for 11yrs eh :-) xx

Hi, just to say if you are having a vaginal hysterectomy, please be sure to take plenty of rest as it is a major operation, and can be confusing as there won't be a big scar to show for it. I had one and was back at work 6 weeks later which was definately too soon, so please dont be afraid to ask for help from family and friends, especially if you have young children x

Fingers crossed your op went ahead as planned today sjdonkey and you are now recovering well. Please remember to take things easy as you have had a major op despite only being a hospital patient briefly :(

Please let us know how you are doing when you can, xx

I'm on the list for a full hystectomy womb removal and ovaries, but I think maybe cause my bowel is stuck to my womb they are cutting me upwards or across my belly, I asked how long I will be in and was told four days or more, don't no if its because I'm having the incision across or up my tummy that I'm in longer think it depends on how your having it done, my worry is I might end up with a stoma bag.
