Mirena coil failing

Hi guys!

I recently had the mirena coil fitted 5 months ago to help with my endometriosis, I reacted to it terribly and have been suffering with acne, weight gain and mood issues (i already have pmdd!). It didnt actually effect my periods at all they are still as bad as they were, so pretty useless. Im 22 and never been on any hormonal contraception before this because I knew it just would not sit right with my body, I am a training pharmacist so that is just my personal opinion! I think hormonal contraceptives can be great for some people!

I went back to my consultant today because of the mood issues, he wanted me to try the localised progesterone dose first because of my pmdd and the risk to my mental health - I have suffered with depression for 6+ years. He has referred me to a pmdd specialist and discussed the option of a hysterectomy (I never have wanted kids), which will be explored further in future with an MDT team.

In the meantime he has suggested I have my mirena removed and try the desogestrel pill. Obviously this is more of a systemic higher dose, so if anyone has any experience, would I suffer with more side effects on the mini pill compared to mirena? Realistically I would like to have my copper coil refitted (I know its not recommended due to risk of heavy bleeding but it never effected mine), as I am in a long term relationship I need effective contraception.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I am sick of dosing myself up with opioids and anti-inflamms!

Thanks guys :) x

hey there! Really sorry this is happening :( I had the deso pill maybe 8 years ago and I wasn’t a huge fan - hard to say if it was the pill or just my mental health at the time.

I do find the mirena coil works better for me (we’re all different and I know a lot of people don’t get on with it). Is it worth sticking out for a few more months to see if it settles?

Anyway I hope whatever you end up doing, helps you x

I’d steer clear. A colleague was suicidal within 2 weeks on the mini pill. History of depression and anxiety. I’ve avoided that and Mirena as I know I won’t get on with them based on my own MH and reactions to the pill in the past. I’ve been trialling urtogestan (cyclical HRT) which I believe is from yams as opposed to the progestin based options and that’s made me puff up and grumpy in the two weeks I take it. I’m 51 with no sign of menopause. (Perimenopause for around 7 years now) . You know yourself and are qualified to make those decisions, all power to you 🙏
