Had my 2nd lap on 15th November. I'm so low. No motivation to do anything. Hurts to walk or stand for any period of time. I can tell I'm gaining weight just sat around all the time. Im usually very active. Really struggling emotionally. Cried a few times today. I have TV programmes and films downloaded, books, crochet projects, Xmas tasks etc. all things I never usually have time for. But I just have no drive to do anything.

Any tips? Is this normal?

Hi, didn’t want to read this and not reply. I’ve had a few general anaesthetics now and definitely found it hard a few weeks later mentally. Anything gynae - you can’t rule out hormones playing up 😖 but I think I always underestimate how much the anaesthetic itself hits you. The exhaustion - mental and physical can be nagging and get you down. I had a short procedure under a short anaesthetic a few weeks back. I’m off work as wore myself out going back too early. I’m in same boat- weirdly too tired to do anything you felt you ought to do/in previous times craved the time to do and now - blugh!! I know this might not help, but you aren’t alone in it. You’ve been through a lot and sometimes we have to just flop for a bit. That said, maybe having someone come round for coffee/a loop around the neighbourhood for a short walk if you can manage or just a chat on the phone can be good (sometimes that can seem too much I know but worth reaching out). Or even on here. I’ve had a lot of support through others that have been through similar ops. Take care and let yourself rest if you need it x

had my lap on Monday and am in the same boat! Have no energy to do anything but am only on day 3 trying to be kind to myself just really difficult not working I’ve got a 2 weeks off work and don’t want to push myself back too early as know I’ll be off longer in the long run. Just know there are so many other people in the same position, just give yourself the time you need to recover and don’t let anyone push you to get better quickly than you feel able. Having an operation like this is not easy.

Hi Hannah. I’ve been there, so I hear you! I absolutely hate not being able to exercise as it helps me mentally so much as well as physically, so enforced rest is just dire, particularly when you feel really rough from surgery anyway. All I can say is that it does get better with time.

For my last surgery in Jan, I tried to get myself out for a really short walk to just get some fresh air every day after a week or so (even though it was cold and wet) then I made it longer bit by bit until I could walk to the local coffee shop and enjoy having people around me. Over time that helped perk me up a bit which then meant I felt like doing a bit more at home.

It can also help to give yourself permission to feel down, if that makes sense. Your body has been through a lot of trauma and it’s ok to feel rough.

Sending you lots of well wishes. X

Hey I had mine on the 7th and I was the same as you as the first week post op I was so done in after a few hours so spent most of it either on the sofa or sleeping. Then by the end of the week I wanted to try move a bit it ended up doing me I cried and felt so hopeless. The second week I had ups mostly so you will get there a I promise. I’m back at work this week but only doing six hours with a break in between but that’s all I can manage is 9- 3.30

Like you the I’m active sitting around hasn’t helped me got a few more walks in and I tried a gentle yoga class yesterday as that’s my main outlet. It felt great to be back on my mat but still tender. The only thing im struggling with is the tiredness still and I think I had a flare up yesterday as my body thinks it’s due a period next week. So felt crappy from that too.

Be gentle with yourself and you’ll get there, and this amazing community is here for you x
