Hello,I've suspected I've had endometriosis for some years now, with a similar story to most people of being dismissed for other symptoms e.g. IBS and having scans and them telling me everything is clear and learning of others stories if the person checking the scan doesn't have endo experience then things are being missed.
I want to get answers once and for all, whether this be referred via my GP or go private to an endometriosis clinic - that I'm reading is the best course of action but need people's advice. I see there's a lot of endo clinics in London but I live too far away from there. Does anyone know of any specialist endo clinics up north or a useful website to help me go to my GP with and or do self referral?
Any help would be great, thank you!

Hello, you want a BSGE centre. Their website details all centres which are spread throughout the UK. There are three in the Manchester area for instance. Both NHS and private.
Just pop your post code in and it’ll show you the closest.
I was torn between Birmingham and Bedford as they were both about an hour a way. Went private for Bedford in the end but heard good things about both. After almost 3 years of being told that it was in my head / not gynae related, being discharged back to my GP multiple times without further investigation, denied an MRI by gynae, booked in for incorrect procedures and a lap with general gynae that found nothing (surprise surprise) I had had enough.
Recently had the much needed MRI and it showed adenomyosis. The endo specialist I'm under says there's no DIE but I could still have endo that's too small to show up on an MRI. As we know, the stage of endo doesn't correlate to the pain so I'm booked in for another lap in May
Thanks so much for getting in touch and sharing your clinic experience. I love nearer to Liverpool but I am definitely open to suggestions, as I want to have answers as soon as I can.
Hi,The nearest one I'm aware of in the NW is Preston Hospital, I can't say I have experience from the gynae there as I'm under my local hospital, and seldom have any issues and my consultant has been great (9/10 times) and haven't had the need to travel elsewhere.
You can ask your GP for a referral to gynae and then the NHS contact you with an offer for a number of hospital/centres... You have a right to chose where you go for investigations/treatment, also can be signposted to another trust that has shorter waiting times
Wishing the best of luck and you get some answers of what you're looking for once and for all ✨
Just wondering, I live in Ireland so not a UK citizen... would I be able to go to Birmingham clinic privately do you think? or is it UK based people only?
Unfortunately you won’t usually qualify for referral to a specialist endo centre on the NHS as there are criteria to be met first. This is severe or suspected severe endo or otherwise where there has been unsuccessful surgery in general gynaecology. What you need is a gynaecologist with a special interest in endo.
Hi, I'm recovering from my lap at the moment. Consultant gynae told me my endo is severe, endometrioma was removed, lots of adhesions affecting back of uterus and bowel with ovaries stuck 'kissing'. Do you think I would meet the criteria for a referral to a specialist centre? And can I ask how I would go about seeking a referral? Would I request this via my gynae consultant who did my surgery (I should have a follow up appt in around 4 months time) or via my GP. Any advice greatly appreciated.
hey lovely. I’m under an incredible endometriosis consultant, seeing him via NHS at Royal Stoke hospital but he does also see patients privately. You only have to Google him to see the extensive work he does with and for people with endometriosis - Mr El Gizawy staffordshiregynaecology.com xxx
I paid privately due to NHS wait times and my age as fertility was a big issue & I saw a consultant that specialises in endo at a Nuffield once diagnosed he put me on the nhs endo clinic at UHNM in stoke , I’d search for endo specialists and then if you can afford and don’t want to wait get the diagnosis privately then your 12-18 months ahead , good luck x
