Is an mri more accurate for Adenomyosis than a laparoscopy?

I've had a laparoscopy in August, that showed probable Adenomyosis. My consultant wanted me to have an mri for more information, as I was diagnosed by ultrasound with a large fibroid. Will the mri show more than the laparoscopy? I've had it this week. Thank you xx

Hi I also had a laparoscopy (second one) in August. They could do little because one fibroid is in my uterus and is taking up space and everything stuck together because of stage 4 endometriosis. So because they suspect endo might have infiltrated my bowels and caused other issues, I had an MRI last week. Apparently this will give more detail about what's going on in my organs (particularly the bowels). Because of the size of the fibroid they couldn't see enough during the laparoscopy. I think the MRI will fill in the gaps and help us work out what treatment options there are. The MRI was quite daunting but I'm hoping it gives more info! Hope that helps a bit! Basically the fibroid was too big to have a meaningful laparoscopy :(

Yes, I had a laparoscopy which didn’t show much but my MRI did show adenomyosis 😃

I'm wondering the same thing. My path has been - very confusing NHS scan where they mentioned endometriomas and a tubo-ovarian abcess and so I got an urgent referral to gynae. Had a private scan in the meantime which was brill who diagnosed no abcess, but endometriomas on both ovaries and sacral ligament along with both of my fallopian tubes and on top of this she said I had likely focal and diffuse adenomyosis. I then went to a general gynae and he booked an MRI. I had it yesterday (along with a complete freakout in the room!) and then I've got the follow up on 19th but he's said it will then need to be referred to a specialist.

I didn't know if they would go straight to a laparoscopy so I'm assuming they feel they'll get more information from the MRI to confirm the ultrasound or give more detail for a treatment plan?

There doesn't seem to be any sense at all in how they order tests and depends highly on the expertise of the person performing/viewing the scan.I paid to see a consultant privately, who took me on as an NHS patient. He said I needed a laparoscopy. My uterus is enlarged but the ultrasound before the laparoscopy showed a fibroid the size of an orange. This didn't show on the laparoscopy, so I guess the mri shows more.

The whole diagnosis process is shocking amd adds to the stress/pain 😢

I hope you get some answers soon x

Yes both MRI and expert ultrasound are the recognised methods to diagnose adeno (other than histology after a hysterectomy). It can’t be seen at a lap at all - it can only be suspected from an enlarged, spongy, asymmetrical uterus for example.

Thank you. That's really interesting to know. The laparoscopy showed a bulky uterus but no Endo x
