Just more like an update more than anything and to check I made the right choice. I asked about having an MRI instead of an ultrasound, the gynae asked if I have painful bowel movements during periods which I do sometimes. He agreed an MRI will be better.
I've just never had an MRI before so wondering how well the cysts on my ovaries will appear vs on an ultrasound? They were found on an ultrasound last time, but I have heard different things on how well it might pick that up? The gynae doctor said the MRI is stronger and will show the ovaries as well, so I'm assuming it must be strong enough to detect the cysts too like on an ultrasound?
I hope this made sense, thank you ☺️

Hey I have recently had an MRI - I don't have any cysts so not sure how much this will help - but they did pick up quite a lot from the scan. They said there was quite a lot of clear evidence of endometriosis, they could see I have a retroverted uterus and also adenomyosis so I would say its definitely worth having. I assume it will be fairly clear if there are cysts present but not sure as obviously I didn't have any on my scan and I am no expert!
Really hope you get the answers you need, best wishes♥️
Hi, my endo was diagnosed by an MRI that I had for something else. They identified that I had ovarian cysts, i had an operation 4 years ago for to have the cysts removed . Recently I've had ultrasound scans which I feel are useless- first they said have cysts, then rescan 6months later to check if first scan was right, then they said its gone, then irs back, at one point they even said I had a cyst on my left ovary (I don't have a left ovary)So you have definitely made the right decision to have an MRI
I've had ultrasound jn the past that didn't pick up my endometrioma (maybe it wasnt there then) but I had an mri and it picked up my endometrioma which is about 4cm. Also a whole load of other adeno and endo in so many places. So yes I would say Mri is much better. Good luck.
hi! I had an MRI and an ultrasound, the ultrasound picked up one cyst but the MRI picked up the large one and then many small finer ones inside the other ovary so yeah it’s a great scan to have to see things more clearly. Also like another group member below I was also fortunate/unfortunate that they could also diagnose my endometriosis and adenomyosis from the scan as they said i have very severe endo and adeno - scans can be fab when things are stage 3 onwards. Might not pick up stuff if it’s only minimal
Well done you. I wish I'd had an MRI. Might not have had to have hysterectomy stopped when they got in there and realised my cervix was fused to my bowel and left ovary. I had two ultra sounds which were useless. Good luck x
In my experience the success of spotting the cysts and any endo/adeno will be down to the skill of the radiographer, rather than which scan you have. I think most can see ovarian cysts, but mine were reported smaller than what was removed during surgery. My stage 4 endo was also missed completely after my MRI was assessed by someone not trained. I wish you all the best for having someone properly trained look at it 🤞 x
Nothing showed up on many pelvic and transvaginal scans I had. I finally had an MRI which showed deep infiltrating endo, fibroids and a large cyst! Not sure how all that was missed for so long. The only thing I had with the MRI it was done in an endo specialist centre so they knew what they were looking for. Definitely worth having the mri
Hi, just came across your post as I was searching for info on MRI. Did you end up having the MRI?
I asked my gynaecologist about having one as I've had a pain in my left abdomen for years now and it seems to be getting worse. I've had to push and push for them to do anything about it and they keep suggesting a laparoscopy. Id rather have MRI but they said it wouldn't show anything??? Reading the comments it doesn't seem like that's the case
Hi yes I got the MRI pretty quickly, I had had an ultrasound done and the gynae wanted to do another - I asked if I could have an MRI and he asked if I get painful bowel movement during periods - when I said yes he arranged an MRI. Hope you get one soon! 💜
