Depo shot

Hi. I have really painful and heavy periods and I always have. They sometimes last for 3 days others 14 days. And sometimes I don’t get them for 35 days and sometimes 20days. Im missing so many days off work and university because of this. Will I be able to go on the Depo just because of painful periods or do you also have to be sexually active? Thanks.

I was put on the Depo shot because non stop unmanageable pain and bleeding was ruining my life at 18/19. I was not sexually active. I've been on it for 12 years +.

I love the Depo shot: I was told they class it as “for contraception” for funding reasons, but that they will prescribe it as a way of managing problem periods.

Have you had a lap? I think a treatment lap and then medical/hormonal intervention worked best for me, but I know that it’s “quicker” to have the depot. If you haven’t had a lap then I would at least get on the waiting list and have depo in the meantime.

Just as a word of warning though: I had to have it 8 weekly in the end to control things, if I only had it every 12 weeks I would get bleeding from about week 9. Apparently this isn’t uncommon for people with problem periods.

My doctor has referred me to have an transvaginal ultrasound rather than a lap as well as blood works before putting me on the Depo. Went in to the doctors to be put on the Depo and walked out with an ultrasound and blood work tests 😂

I was on the depo for three years and it was good as it stopped my periods whilst I was on it

I would have a chat to your GP first and see if they are willing to do any investigations like an ultrasound scan. The contraceptive pill might help with your irregular periods, as an alternative to the depot, if you have not tried it.

Hope you can find something effective.

Hey, yeah my GP has referred me to get an ultrasound and blood work. I’ve been on every pill so far and none work.
