Northern Ireland waiting list for hysterectomy.

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can help. After waiting 3 years for an appointment with a consultant, I finally got put on the waiting list for a total hysterectomy. I am suffering so much and honestly cant wait for the op to finally get some relief.

I'm trying to find out roughly how long I'm going to be waiting for the op and cant get answers from anyone! Does anyone have any idea who I can contact about this? Or Is there anyone from NI who has had a hysterectomy who can tell me how long they had to wait? I have tried my GP who couldn't tell me anything, as far as I'm aware I don't have a specific Consultant, there is just a number of them who take people from the top of the list.

Any help would be very much appreciated 🙂

Hi! I’m so sorry you’re in so much pain. I too am on a list for a total hysterectomy in Belfast. I’ve been on the urgent list since May 2022. Did you know that in Derry/Londonderry they have a dedicated endometriosis specialist clinic? I really think we need one in Belfast too. It’s ridiculous how long women are having to wait even for an appointment with a gynaecologist.

Hi there, I live in Northern Ireland, I have been on the waiting list for 7 years, stage 4 endo, frozen pelvis - I was finally called to see a consultant last month and they sent me for an MRI - they hope to have it done before the end of the year.. I am registered with Altnagelvin and The Royal, have been on both waiting lists for 7 years. Let me know if you have any other questions and I can try to help. best wishes Nicola

omg! Why for 7 years seems a very long time!! I am going through the turmoil of no answers wondering how it is the receptionists won’t return your calls or emails, like hello, what are you being paid for!? We are playing the long game…. :~(

Hi ladies,

Sorry you’ve had such a long wait! The healthcare system here. for this is shocking. I haven’t had a hysterectomy but I do have endometriosis and had my first laparoscopic procedure and treatment done there a few days ago.

Obv I followed the procedure of GPS all the drugs of day as a tickbox before ‘qualifying’ to see a consultant! Then it’s 2-4 years waiting lists for a procedure. However I got a private consultation with a top doctor in gynae who specialises in all this and I signed up to a medical health benefit place who would cover the procedure after 6-12 months of membership. Obv this is sooo much better than the nhs waiting lists of you need treatment! Monthly payments weren’t that dear either.

Although another tip I can give is to call the appointments department of the hospital you registered with for your surgery and asked to be put the cancellation call list! Then keep following up every few weeks to make sure your on the call list

Hope this helped some of you x

I was added to list for total hyst late 2019 and was told would be offered op within 6 months - then COVID hit, But was called into see new consultant, as previous has left/retired, early July with the hope of being seen by end of year and have my op over me and all 27th July, - they seem to be picking up quite a few, if your willing to travel to SWA. I would recommend despite the rough journey home - great hospital.
